Bangkok Ranked Top City In Asia

Bangkok ranked top city in Asia

AUSTRALIA: -- Bangkok has been ranked the top city in Asia by readers of Conde Nast Traveler, while Phuket won the 18th annual readers’ choice award as the top island in Asia.

According to the survey, other top Asian cities were Hong Kong and Singapore, while other top islands are Bali and Mauritius.

This year’s survey boasted the highest responses and scores ever in each category. With nearly 28,000 travelers voting, the lists show an even greater global variety and depth than prior years.

Many perennial favorites held their top spots. Singapore Airlines is again the 2005 top international airline, and has led this category for 17 of the past 18 years (in 1994 Swissair took the top spot). San Francisco, the top US city, has also been tops for 17 of the past 18 years (in 1992 Santa Fe won the honour). There were some surprises, including St Lucia’s Ladera, which is the first-ever Caribbean Hotel to rank number one in the Best of the Best category. St John also climbed to the top of the Caribbean Island category, marking the first time since 1994 that Bermuda has not won.

New Orleans made the top-10 cities list, which it has done consistently since Conde Nast Traveler’s first reader poll in 1988. The magazine is confident that The Big Easy will rank high in the years to come, despite the devastation by Hurricane Katrina.

New Orleans can find hope in Thailand’s recovery. With five resorts, all in Phuket, in the top 15 Asian resorts category, there is proof that these regions are fully rebounding after last year’s tsunami.

Then my own guess would be that most of the voters must have never been more than 100k from home in their entire lives.

Top City in Asia?..........................For What?

Sexual services, choice, quality and availability? Oh yes sir!

Bars & Nightlife? Definetely a contender.

Traffic jams? Definitely right up there, probably no competition.

Corruption? Undoubtedly. (Tours available to government house to see the contestants.)

Quality hotels? Definitely.

Friendliness of people? No question.

Food choices and availability? I'd say yes.

Anything else?

Would be interesting to know what criteria they used to come to such a conclusion. As ratcather points out - high points for friendliness, nightlife, availability of cheap sex (for those such inclined), great food. On the other hand, Bangkok can hardly be described as being family friendly or clean, nor said to have good public transport (although it has improved), fresh air or nice scenery.
