dutchguest Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Everybody will have his reasons to go to Thailand, but i.m.o. the whole topic was degenerating in the direction that in the west we do everything better and know much better what is good for Thailand. So I wanted to point at another side of the western education system.
DLock Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 Th Tablet PC's promised by the PTP will help reduce the education gap in Thailand. With free wifi, effective educational software, regularly updated, training and support, these devices will do much to help lift the education of Thai youngsters. Or not.
DanR Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 There's not much doubt that the Thai education system is in a sorry state but any article which premises its analysis on IQ is not really worth paying much attention to.
philo Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 The Thai 'wai' originated in India (...wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_greeting). So did (much of) the language (a few searches will show that (it is probable beyond much doubt that) Thai originates from Pali/Sanskrit via Khmer (Cambodian)). The problem (imho) relates to the Indian 'caste' system - or feudality, if you will. Another way of showing that you carry no weapons (or scorpions or snakes or ...) is when you hand over something to somebody: You hand it over with your right (clean, palm open, fingers straight - in short 'all visible') hand while your left hand is openly showed grasping your right underarm. I do not know whether I will try to give my children vitamin pills / nutritional additives and a 'good' education - or may be just leave them to be happy people.

Sorry to say - the tablets will not solve the problem. In the village where my children lives - there is hardly mobile telephone coverage (goes for all companies). Furthermore - no telephone land line cables. I tried to get one: Yup, I have to pay for the 3 km's cable and get at least 4 paying customers (or get 4 house telephone numbers for myself).
