My Thai friend said to me last week she wants a notebook/pad and wants to spend about 9,000 baht. I think she thought that because I have a computer at home I would know about these things. Well the truth is I don't. She wants to know which one to buy and I have no idea what to tell her.

Then I had this brilliant idea, if I don't know what to recommend there will be loads of people on Thai visa who do. So whats the best 9,000 baht book/pad for a Thai lady who I think just wants to surf and skype.

14 k gets a decent netbook with a genuine Windows OS preinstalled. If you can live with a Thai version and buy the netbook with no OS, then there are lots of choices in the 9-10K neighborhood.

I recommend ASUS products. They invented the netbook. I've owned two- typing on one now and they have always been great. Never a problem. EEE PC 1215 B is paricularly sweet. AMD dual core processor, Radeon graphics processor, 12 inch screen, USB 3 is going for 9990 THB. Models with 10 inch screen are cheaper - right in the price range you want.

The cheapest decent notebook I could find, according to my IT guy, was around 14k.

That's about right. Netbooks without OS or with Linux are in the price range the OP is looking at > Invadeit.com

The prices on the invadeit site are slightly higher than the marked prices in Fortune center. The ASUS 1215 B is 9990 and the 1015 PX is 8900. Was looking at the 1215B last weekend with much chagrin because I bought the 1215 N - which has dual core Atom, NVidia graphics and no USB 3 for 17 K a few minths ago. :(

The OP needs to recognize the distinction between "notebooks" and "netbooks," which sound similar but really are two different classes of portable computer...

For purposes of the Thai lady, a smaller netbook probably would be fine, and indeed those can be had new in Thailand with name brands for 8000 to 9000 and up... Fine for basic web surfing and Skyping, in most cases...

It's more traditional, usually larger notebooks that probably have general starting prices around 15,000 baht....

The difference being, notebooks generally are somewhat larger and heavier, typically have more memory and a faster processor, usually a larger keyboard and almost always a larger and better resolution display.... Also better suited toward running multiple programs together because of more memory and faster processor.

And of course, another factor in the pricing of either is whether the unit comes with a real licensed version of Windows, or comes with no OS, or comes with some pirated version....

More and more used notebooks showing up in Pantip and Fortune in the B5000 to B8000 range, some quite recent models. Very important to check actual battery charge duration from full and not just the percentage shown on the tray icon; very expensive to replace...B2000+

Could it be that you fell for the "trick" that most list prices on netbooks and notebooks are shown without VAT?

Remove VAT from the prices on invadeIT's page and you will get the same list prices I bet you :)

It really baffles me why they do it all over Thailand and how it can be allowed to advertise with such small *'s telling you to add 7% to the price.
