The strangest thing happened this week. I was in a coffee shop using the wi-fi and joined a web-site offering videos. From my house, I can't open any of their sites. I've tried clearing cache and cookies, resetting the modem etc but to no avail.

All the computers in my house can't open these sites or my ipad. The only thing I can think of is my IP address. The site is not blocked in the usual way by showing the govt. page - nothing at all happens - just sticks.

How can I hide my IP address?

BTW, they're not porn vdos

Proxy, VPN :)

Google is your friend try 'hide my ip' :)

Please remember, we cannot discuss the use of any of the above to bypass government blocks.

Thanks - there is nothing illegal about this site. Sorry, I didn't realise it was not allowed to discuss but understand why.

The key word here is GOVERNMENT, if the site itself is preventing access (you are not getting a gov't warning) then using a proxy / VPN / other means is fair game.

Using such techniques to bypass copyright controls is also illegal, so we really discourage discussion, that said, almost zero chance of anything untoward happening.

If you are on a pc, check your hosts file. Your symptoms sound like the sites you try to access has been re-routed, typically to 127.0.0.1. The hosts file on a standard Windows installation is located in C:\WIndows\System32\Drivers\etc Remove the re-routing entries if they exists. How to do this on an I-pad I have no idea about.

A quick check is to try to ping the unresponsive site and see what ip is used.

If your service provider is giving you a fixed ip address, it may have been blacklisted from accessing certain sites. I had the same problem and was unable to access twitter, metacritic and other mainstream sites, whilst other sites were OK. You can check to see if your ip has been blacklisted (do a google search on "has my ip been blacklisted".

I have no idea how my ip became blacklisted, suspect it was as the result of some hack attacks on my wife's Facebook account; but I just contacted my service provider, they gave me a fresh ip, and everything is now back to normal.
