Hello Everyone,

I am coming to Bangkok and was wondering what would everyone recommend for the best SIM card or method to call long distance back home to Canada. I will be in Bangkok for 2 weeks. Last time I had "Happy" and it cost a fortune to call back home.

My hotel the "Swiss Park Inn" doesn't have Wifi in the room is there any cheap way (true) to get it in the room?

Thanks

Yes, the True InterSIM 00600 rate of 1 baht/min is impossible to beat. True also has 006 for 3 baht, CAT 009 for 3 baht, 008 a bit more.

And yes, 3G is a potentially better solution for your internet access. You now have options on 900 Mhz - AIS, 2100 Mhz - TOT/MVNOs and 850 Mhz - True. So with the right phone, aircard/dongle or MiFi device you'd be all set. You could layer a 3G plan on top of an InterSIM, for example, if your device supports 850 Mhz 3G.

Maybe tell us more about your current equipment on hand, calling/data patterns and budget, to get a more customized recommendation.

Hello

I have a MacBook AIr and my phone cheap (because if stolen no big lose) Nokia 2600. If I understand you right I purchase a aircard/dongle or MiFi device for around $35.00USD then purchase a monthly plan around 650Baht per month for Unlimited internet? I am only going to be in Bangkok for 1 week but will be coming back in Sept 2011 and if I bought a open aircard/dongle or MiFI device I could use it with metfone in Cambodia.

Where can I go in Bangkok to find out more.

Thanks

Dan

Yes, more or less. Maybe no need for an unlimited plan, just get a volume-based plan, 500 MB should be sufficient?

Also make sure you get an aircard/dongle/MiFi device which supports 850/1900/2100 or 900/1900/2100.

And you could share 1 SIM between the phone and aircard, but you cannot use both at the same time, obviously.

Hello,

Go to the True Office and purchase a InterSim card with a 1 month plan volume-based plan. I am on the internet 8 hours per day is this enough.

Purchase a DWM-156 USB Adapter card. Which I can use with other providers in the future.

Where is there a True Office and where can I purchase a DWM-156 D-Link Dongle in Bangkok?

Approx. How much for the SIM, Plan and dongle? Under a hundred dollars?????

Thanks for your Help!

DWM-156

3.75G HSUPA USB Adapter

• Based on HSUPA 3G technology: up to 7.2 Mbps data transfer speed

• Fast USB 2.0 interface

• Operating Systems: Windows VISTA/XP/2000 and MAC OS X 10.4 and higher

• Built-in drivers for true plug-and-play installation

• Works as a 3G modem for use with selected D-link routers

• Unlocked: works with data SIM cards from any operator

The DWM-156 3.75G HSUPA USB Adapter allows you to connect your notebook to your mobile broadband service wherever you are in the world. While connected, you can transfer data, stream media, and send SMS messages. The DWM-156 is completely unlocked and works with data SIM cards from any operator.

Optimal performance with 3.5G HSUPA technology

The DWM-156 supports the latest 3.75G High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) technology, which offers data rates up to 7.2 Mbps (5.76 Mbps upload) and helps to reduce latency. 3.75G is also backwards compatible with 3.5G, 3G and 2.5G technologies.

Total compatibility

This adapter is compatible with Windows and MAC Operating Systems: all the necessary drivers and software are built in, making the installation truly plug-and-play.

You can also use the DWM-156 to act as a modem on compatible D-Link routers and share the 3G connection between several computers or Wi-Fi enabled devices.

I believe all your questions are answered in the links I've provided.

You could buy an aircard before you arrive, perhaps in your home country? Or you could buy it here. There are two large-ish IT malls: Fortune IT Mall, Panthip. I paid 1,650 baht for the DWM-156.

You could buy the InterSIM upon arrival at the airport where True have a shop on level 2, between doors 4 and 5. This SIM is ~ 50 baht. You'll need to add money to that to cover your calls and data plan. Or you can buy the SIM literally anywhere, at millions of shops.

You could get a 1.1 GB 3G data plan for 399 baht. (~ 428 with VAT). Not sure what your 8 hours a day on the internet equals in Mega-bytes.

So figure 2,150 all in (except money for calls).

Doesn't the Swiss Park Inn have internet access?

FWIW, the OP said in his OP that, "...My hotel the "Swiss Park Inn" doesn't have Wifi in the room...", so assumed he was familiar with the situation. All i did was locate the property to determine if it is covered by True, TOT/MBNO and AIS. It is.

Hello,

Swiss Park Hotel doesn't have Internet in the room only in the lobby. What does "All i did was locate the property to determine if it is covered by True, TOT/MBNO and AIS. It is." mean?

I have turn on my Mac and can see True at home are something like that can I use that? This was the last time I was there in Apr 2011.

Is True InterSIM and the Internet with the dongle covered?

Thanks

Dan
