News_Editor
Cargo ship sinks off Thai coast after collision 2011-08-03 05:59:54 GMT+7 (ICT) BANGKOK, THAILAND (BNO NEWS) -- A cargo ship has sunk after it collided with another vessel off the coast of the central-southern coast of Thailand, but crew members were able to exit safely. The collision happened on Tuesday morning off Thailand's Chon Buri province in the Udom Gulf harbor, local marine police told the Bangkokg Post. There were no reports of casualties. According to the marine police, the Unison Vego vessel, a large cargo ship which is registered in Panama, struck another large cargo ship, the Ocean Tower, which was unloading at that time. The Unison Vego was trying to anchor at Siam Seaport Harbour in Udom Gulf when its engine suddenly shut down and rammed into the ship, the police said. The collision caused a large hole in the Ocean Tower, which gradually sunk, but the 20 crew members were able to evacuate the ship without incident. The ship sunk with most of the machinery that was being unloaded still inside the ship. The exact cause of the collision is being investigated. -- © BNO News All rights reserved 2011-08-

bkkjames
The tug boats are all on the chao phraya river busily moving rice barges and one ship in and out for sandblasting and painting. Why they allow this in residential neighborhoods (sandblasting) next to schools, wats etc is beyond me. As for the out of control ship, I witnessed one on the river recently that lost power and control and nearly took out a dock and passenger boat (3 meters max), no tug escort. OzMick
Tugs?? "The exact cause of the collision is being investigated." There is a strong possibility that the master of the Ocean Tower, moored at the wharf, will be charged with the marine equivalent of "illegal parking" and forced to pay compensation. BTW there is an ocean-going cargo vessel with the unusual name of Titan Uranus. Google if you must.

I'll bet the crew of the good ship Ocean Tower had no trouble complying with that name when they saw the Unison Vego bearing down on them.
AleG
Not surprising, if you've ever been to Koh Sichang you'll know how mindbogglingly packed with ships the space between the mainland and the island is. There are hundreds of large ships and barges there, navigation must be very tricky.
