I was just reading the latest issue of Sarakadee magazine, Thailand's premier cultural journal, and came across this paragraph in an article about the Mekong River.

The Mekong in the globalization era is plunged into cross-border and internal conflicts as international competition intensifies over the riches of the river and its tributaries. The "New (Dis) Order" led by Western and Chinese interests may mean turbulent times ahead for the Mekong and the 100 million inhabitants of the watershed.

So the Thais have got it figured out that anything that goes wrong here or along the country's perimeters is the fault of Western and Chinese interests ...

Yeah, they are correct. And I think that the "New World Disorder" is exactly what it is.

Funny how that expression is coming back ? I haven't heard it since, well, you know who, was in power 10 years ago.

So the Thais aren't responsible for any of the damage being done to the Mekong (such as the blasting opposite Hat Khrai in Chiang Khong, the overfishing, etc), only Westerners and Chinese?
