Pattani Police Vet Plans against Growing Violence

The Pattani Provincial Police Bureau is taking a more proactive approach to contain the increasingly frequent insurgent attacks in southern Thailand.

Commander of the Pattani provincial police, Major General Pichet Pitisethpan, has called a meeting with all superintendents and their deputies from all of the 15 police stations in 12 districts.

During the meeting the Pattani police chief expressed concern for the wave of violence that has swept through the area during the past month.

Pichet ordered police to take a more proactive approach in curbing violence in the region.

He ordered the officers to carry out more intelligence gathering operations and crackdowns on the perpetrators responsible for past insurgent attacks.

He also asked the officers to recruit help from members of the public in the peacekeeping and security operations.

Meanwhile, earlier today, 52-year-old Yuso Wagueji, a village head from Yarang District, was shot and killed while driving home in his truck on a local highway.

Initial investigation has revealed that Yuso's truck was ambushed by an unknown number of attackers.

Police believe that the shooting was motivated by a personal dispute or an attempt to stir unrest in the area.

Former BKK Govornor Named Chief Democrat Strategist

As part of the party's post-election restructuring effort, the Democrat Party has named former Bangkok governor Apirak Kosayodhin as its main party strategist.

Meanwhile, the party will set up a shadow Cabinet once the list of the first Yingluck Cabinet is made public.

Democrat spokesman Chavanont Intarakomalsut said members of the party's executive board met to discuss the scope of responsibilities for each party executive.

Democrat party-list MP Apirak Kosayodhin was appointed as the main party strategist.

Chavanont added the meeting also named senior party member Chamni Sakdiseth to oversee the party's political and parliamentary affairs.

Another senior Democrat, Juti Krairiksh, will be in charge of members' participation.

The Democrat is expected to hold a party seminar at the end of this month.

With the new set of executives, the party hopes to revamp its work strategies and direction in order to gain more support from the voting public.

The party met earlier today to discuss the responsibilities of MPs as members of the Opposition.

Clarification was also issued for a mistake in vote counting for the party's board election when Pongsri Tharapum received more votes than Ratchada Thanadirek.
