Ms. Yingluck, Please Get Rid Of Mrs. / Miss Titling

It is rather telling that you reference these "titles" as an indication of "sexual availability" don't you think?

Patrick

Yes, it's telling of sexist cultures where women's titling is the sum of their perceived sexual availability.

It isn't just a title but indicative of how language is used to categorize women in ways men are not subject to. Sexually categorize in that it indicates if they are available, or not.

After due consideration I have to agree.

Had I known the OP was a (doubtless hairy legged) Farang "female" (sic) I would never have offered an opinion.

^ I'll discuss hairy legs IF we can also discuss how women are shaving pubes entirely off to resemble prepubescent girls?

Kerry K.

I' d really rather both men and women have no title at all. But if we must, let them be status free.

When I was young our maid called me master and continued that until she died when I was past 40, I rather liked it.

I swear I am not trying to be offensive. But I have to wonder if the term " master" for young men or boys is the root of, are you ready- masturbate ?

I like hirsute women and there are lots in Thailand so I am happy but I think you miss my point. Since women do have this status thing of married that will be difficult to change. I don't care if anyone knows if I am married or not and am volunteering to tell anyone on any official form. I don't think most men care. It has always been a matter of complete indifference to me if I was married or not. Any of my wives will confirm that.

I don't think so but I'm not sure. I frankly don't see how men find the energy in Thailand but at my advanced age it is a subject that I can only approach at a theoretical level. I do wonder also about esquire and that tag for lawyers. But I am too lazy go google.

Either your humour is as dry as 35 ,000 feet or you are the one totally missing the point.

Methinks, Me hopes about a mile high.

For those who are still pondering why this is an issue, look at your ID , does it state marital status in any way , other than the title before your name?

If that title is Mr, does that indicate your marital status.

OK NOw look at your girlfriend or wife's ID and does the title before her name indicate any kind of status.

I just find it more that remarkable that this is considered non- sexist. Right ? This isn't sexist in any way? C'mon on !!

Or Ok.. Yes, of course it's sexist, quite beyond any realm of fairness.

Then it remains an acceptable practice is what needs to be changed.

I have no idea why you are getting your knickers in a twist about something so unobtrusive. Surely there are real feminist issues you would rather take on.

I would think one of the important reasons most people left their country of birth to live in Thailand is because they were sick of the PC brigade encroaching on everyday life.

Chairman - Chairperson

Fisherman - Fisher?

Humankind - Personkind

Now we have everyone in movies being called Actors. With all the interchangeable names of 'Actors' I don't know if someone is talking about a man or woman. Maybe that is the point but it just confuses me no end.

Why do you find it offensive that someone knows if you are married or not? Would you rather they didn't know or is it just a bit of empowerment for you. You do realise it isn't empowering at all, maybe in a feminist mind and it makes her feel more superior but not to us guys who really don't care.

I wouldn't give a toss if I had a title that indicated if I was single or married. I am what I am, why try to hide it. What reason to try and hide it. Who would care except me, I'm sure it wouldn't matter to others what I was called.

Perhaps the problem in your lack of response from editors is that no one cares, in the grand scheme of things it's a non event. You know who and what you are and that is all that matters.

Perhaps married men could be called Mr and single men Esquire. I really don't care nor does it keep me awake at nights with worry. There are more important things in life to be concerned about.

As for shaving downstairs, well, some men like it some don't. When I was younger all were hairy and I didn't like going down there because of the bacteria smell, now that I'm older and most are trimmed or shaved I enjoy it more and the hairs don't get caught in my throat. I just looks more inviting and clean.

I guess you have to decide if you want to eliminate sexism or instill equality. I like sexism but am all for equality.

At least I think I am. I really haven't thought that through but it sounds good at first writing.

Instead of taking offence at it why not look at the positive side.

You have something men don't. You are able to have your marital status on your licence, men don't. You are lucky.

Perhaps men should protest outside the government buildings to be allowed the same privilege.

And why must lady boys have Mr. in their ID-cards.

Sorry, I missed this response before.

I think it's horrid that post op trans have to report as their original sex. That's what people shouldn't care about. Sexuality is private, marital status should be, too.

Yes, can we not be rid of titles and just have M.?

If sexuality is private then shouldn't women wear a burka? Sexuality is only private if you are ashamed of it. The average lady boy sure shows a lot of sexuality. Now it is legal for him to prance around in public without a shirt. Golly gee what would happen if his id card was changed?

Wallaby, your responses are disappointing. Please try something other than patronizing dismissal ( " ..Get a hobby." ) and now posturing belittlement in way of facetiousness.

UH, so you were missing the point. Rats as I though the bone dry humour was quite good.

I think there is a difference between display of your sex, and sexuality displays.

If you think I'm wrong then display your sexuality on the street and see what happens.

And yes.... baring of chests, yet another inequity. Men able to feel the cool breeeze on their chests and bare back in public, what a luxury to not be expected to wear clothing.

I've seen plenty of fat men with teats bigger them mine walking around cool as can be. .

So many inequities, so little time.

If sexuality is private then shouldn't women wear a burka?

That is pretty much summarizes the attitude women's role as sexual things. It is her sexuality that must be constrained, covered. It is always a sexualised female image that is used to represent sexuality. Does it not take two sexes?

What I'm wondering is how this title affects her assets assessment and declaration???? She is not legally married, but married in the eyes of Thai culture.

I am in agreement with you. I wear lycra when I ride my bike and keep an extra pair of socks rolled up in my pocket incase it rains.

I just had to jump back in here this topic is just to much fun. After readin tigerwans last post with the below copy I wish to say something about men and women and sexuality if I may. Men donot care if they are sexy so hard to become a sex object and if they are they could care less.

Women on the other hand want to be desired and be sexy. They dress to be sexy, they act sexy, etc. They want to be desired sexually.. No wonder men donot understand you women especially sexy feminist types. Bras are worn to enhance their shape, high heels are worn to enhance their legs I could go on. I honestly feel most feminist things are born from boredom. Western men treat women way to well and get little respect for doing so. So the answer maybe be a burka . As the old saying goes sex sells so donot promote it with fashion style actions etc ,if you donot want buyers or put up a buyer beware sign.

Surely this thread is not meant to be taken seriously.

Is it?

Gosh, never thought about that. If it is my apologies to all concerned.

She has children and is not married? Not that it's any of my business. Can you imagine a politician doing this in USA? She'd be burned as a witch !

This all came about as Thai women were to be allowed to pick their marital status moniker , supposedly liberating ? Jaysus. SoS

I like for you to adhere a tight nylon strap across your chest, for the entire day for the rest of your life and then tell me how sexy it makes you feel.

Then we can discuss ways to simulate menstruation too, so you can get an accurate picture of modern day femininity.

If women are obsessed with being perceived as imminently, crucially f*ckable, then I'd have to surmise it is quite possibly because they feel that is their entire value.

I never knew that. I never thought to even think of her marital status. Never crossed my mind. She is a good looking women educated in Kentucky, if I met her in a bar I'd buy her a drink and try to get further acquainted. I doubt if her marital status would have ever come up. I dated a doctor here for three months before I found out she was married. It just never came up. Well, read Thai Visa and learn something every day.

We get it Tiger, it sucks to be you.

This is almost as good of a thread now as that Canadian looney who was going to get a "self-supporting" visa issued by Canada so she and her Diesel dude/stockbroker/astrophysicist hubby could come to Thailand for a year with their blond and blue-eyed kids and show the Thais how to live.

Western feminists, thanks for the reminder about a positive of living in Thailand.

It's strange that any title is needed at all on ID cards. Usually passports do not have titles - they list names and gender etc. If the card needs to show married or not, then surely its easier to have a category "Married: Yes/No" - which would be much easier in use too.

There are also many other titles in use: Dr, Rev etc (most genderless) - limiting to three (MR, MRS, MISS) would indeed infer it is geneder and marital status that is required and not title.

I think you hit right on. She hates being a woman so sorry. We shall have to sensitive to that from now on.. I think women menstruated before modern day femininity, but how do I know I am a man.

I reckon it's good for women to have a choice, it's really up to them to do something about it, if they want to, what do the ladies have to say about it.

I don't get called Mr they say something like chip whatever to me.

At last !! Thank you, finally.

When I was in high school, USA, yes, in the late 70's- the use of Ms. was widespread. Now it seems no one understands Ms. simply denotes female, no marital status need be revealed and I can't see why the concept is so controversial and threatening.

We are going ass- backwards on women's equality.

This is a prime example of the value of good education. The young women are educated enough to realize womens liberation was a mistake and are abandoning it. Or as some old timers would say going ass-backwards.

Their stopping of useing MS is only a small part.

But are you not seeing that only women must declare the marital status?

I really am waiting for someone to defend this as either not sexist, or defend why this sexist practice continues?

It doesn't suck to be me I thought personality analysis and personal insults were not welcome on this forum?

No matter I can address your rudeness without have to be the same.

I simply think LLS should think a little more about the inequities of forcing women to behave in a certain manner, such as wearing tight elastic around their torsos?

We can talk about showing a lot of skin, too I find it odd when the women are so blatantly different in dress. Why don't men show a lot of skin?

It's simply sexualization of women that they are expected to constantly present a sexy image. Even when they are far beyond child bearing, still the appearance is so important.

To appeal to men so they can take care of you is the modern women's MO?

No I think young women might actually not think that is best for them if they have a chance to make a choice. They really don't here in Thailand.

We get it Tiger, it sucks to be you.

LLS, I htink most would agree that education in the US has been in steep decline for the last few decades. Women's studies and sports have the first curriculum to be axed in fact ( Thanks Reagan )

PLease, I wish you would actually read my posts before simply refusing to consider them. Ms. is in widepread use in US and UK , many parts of Eu ( and Aus? )

Korean and Japan too, offer it on visa applications so it really isn't that horrid an idea to ask Thailand to follow suit.

Come back and lecture us when you understand a bit more about Thai society.

You obviously have no grasp of the concept of status and face here.

Rank these in the order a Thai would arrange them mentally in their minds on first meeting.

divorcee, married, unmarried.
