The OP really should consider using the money to buy property, I've done the same on two long term contracts in Hong Kong and Europe and it can really work out well. A friend of mine used his allowance to make payments on a boat that was moored in Hong Kong, when the work finished his boat was paid for and he sailed it away.

Thanks, I intend to buy a house and will use my housing allowance to cover loan payments, but will probably do one rental cycle first while we settle and have a chance to decide on a long term location.
