DARE 2/11 - The most anticipated MMA event ever held in Thailand

By James Goyder

BANGKOK: -- Dare Fight Sports, Thailand’s biggest Professional MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) organization, are putting on their highly anticipated second MMA show in Bangkok. Dare 1/11 took place at the Insomnia Night Club in June and featured seven superb MMA fights and the next event will be taking place in the same venue on September 24th.

MMA is increasingly popular and there are schools all over Thailand where students are studying all the various techniques of the world’s fastest growing sport. In DARE the fights take place inside a cage, under the International “Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts” which are the rules used in the UFC. Competitors can win by knockout, submission or referees/judges decision.

Unlike Muay Thai an MMA fight can take place either standing up or on the ground and involves elements of wrestling and Jiu Jitsu as well as stand up fighting. The sport has been hugely popular in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK and events can attract crowds of up to 50,000 people and a pay per view audience of millions.

Dare’s first event, “DARE 1/11”, in June received rave reviews and the fight footage can be viewed on the DARE Fight Sports website (www.darefightsports.com). Fighters from France, Brazil, the US, the UK, South Africa, Korea Malaysia and, of course, Thailand did battle in front of an enthusiastic, sold out crowd.

Some of the top MMA camps in the region were represented including Evolve MMA in Singapore, Team MAD in Korea and Boxer Rebellion, 301 Muay Thai & MMA, Phuket Top Team and Tiger Muay Thai & MMA in Thailand.

So far two of the fights on the September 24th card at DARE 2/11 have been revealed. The first is a battle of two unbeaten welterweight fighters as Wiktor Svensson from Tiger Muay Thai in Phuket takes on Krysztof Hajtalowicz from Golden Triangle International Martial Arts in Chiang Mai.

Svensson is from Sweden and has a perfect MMA record of 3-0. He is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu purple belt and both his last two fights were broadcast in Thailand by ESPN Star Sports.

Hajtalowicz, known simply as Cris Haja, is from Poland and has a record of 2-0. His last fight took place in Pattaya earlier this year and he won with a rapid submission. He also holds a gold medal from the Never Tap Asia submission fighting tournament in Phuket.

The second fight to have been announced is between long term Bangkok resident and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teacher Adam Kayoom and South Korean Seok Mo Kim.

Kayoom, originally from Malaysia, has a professional MMA record of 1-1, holds a black belt in BJJ and is also a World Champion in Muay Thai. Seok Mo Kim is one of the top MMA prospects from South Korea and has an MMA record of 2-2 with a background in wrestling and kickboxing.

The President of DARE Championship, Mr. Rathtee Thitidonpipat believes that the second event in Bangkok will build on some of the momentum of the previous DARE 1/11 event,

“Mixed martial arts is a very new sport in Thailand so I was pleased to see so many people come to our first show in June. We will have plenty of Thai fighters on the card in September including a national Judo champion and I think as people here in Thailand learn more about MMA they will also learn to love the sport like fight fans all over the world do,” he said.

The only problem is everyone ends on the ground real quick and it's a lot of rolling around. No elbows put Muay Thai fighters at a disadvantage. The rules - used to be no rules - are now very clearly biased towards wrestlers / brazilian jiujitsu.

Still would love to see this live.

So only wrestling and Jiu Jitsu? I thought all styles were allowed.

I'd like to see a real shaolin kung <deleted> master enter the ring. That would be interesting.

I think elbows are completely legal, except to the back of the neck.

All DARE fights are fought according to the UFC rules, meaning that elbows are very much okay in all positions.

And the fights are fought in a cage!!

That's cool!

MMA is finally coming to Thailand!

Cool, I guess I misinterpreted that...

Read up on it, elbows are allowed except "striking down" with the elbow... and there many other rules against striking a downed opponent - I guess THAT's what explains all that rolling around. Rolling around is very good under UFC rules 'cause people are not allowed to kick you or stomp on you or do any manner of other things to you. Those things that are most effective against somebody lying on the ground are forbidden. And the vale tudo guys and wrestlers use that for their "lying down you can't hit me" pose. Which is stupid. But hey still fun... ;)

I was at their first event and certainly will not miss their second, absolutely superb and a great night was had, tremendously well done considering it was their first event!

Hoping tickets still available when I return from the UK as Insomnia is a small venue for an event of such proportion from a promoters point of view but great for us as spectators!
