They've not been rewarded for poll victory, PM insists amid threats row

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra insisted yesterday that red-shirt leaders would continue to be given government posts because they were qualified, not because they were being rewarded for Pheu Thai's poll victory.

"We do not divide ourselves into groups or factions but we will make the appointments in line with the capability and expertise of the individuals. And it will depend on the decisions of the ministers," Yingluck said.

Ministers who were ready to propose their advisers and secretaries would start seeking approval from Cabinet at this week's meeting, she said.

Some red-shirt leaders were named for political positions last week.

Education Minister Worawat Auapinyakul said red-shirt leaders should be given a chance to serve the people as political appointees now that they have been elected Pheu Thai MPs.

When red-shirt MPs become secretaries or advisers to Cabinet members, they can try to prove they can work for the country, he said.

The previous government led by the Democrat Party had a good image but disappointed the public because of its inability to solve the country's problems, he claimed.

The Democrats criticised the move to allocate political positions to red-shirt leaders.

Democrat MP Warong Dejkijwikrom said the plan to make red-shirt leaders deputy government spokesmen and assistants to Cabinet members would be a way to pay the red-shirt movement back for helping Pheu Thai win the election.

Red-shirt activities had already become flagrant - they intimidated those who disagreed them, he said.

Democrat MP Sathit Wongnongtoey would ask Deputy Prime Minster Chalerm Yoobamrung today to rein in the rogue red shirts after they violated other people's rights, he said.

The red shirts had been harassing people and infringing on people's rights so the government must keep the movement under control, he said.

Two men attacked by red shirts last week when they protested against the House speaker were not hired by the Democrats and were not Democrat members as alleged by Chalerm, he noted.

Asking the deputy prime minister to reign in the red shirts, thats a good one. He and his family of hooligans should fit right into the apparent theory of intimidation. They may have written a few guidelines for the troops.

PM Defends Appointment of Red-shirts to Assist Cabinet Members

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra says that the appointment of red-shirt members to assist cabinet members is not politically motivated.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has backed the endorsement of red-shirt members as state officials such as advisers and secretaries to several ministers, saying the decision was truly based on qualifications.

She said the appointment could be forwarded to the Cabinet this week if the line-up is finalized in time.

Education Minister Worawaj Eu-apinyakul reiterated that the red-shirts have the right to come back and push for their political ideology as political civil servants.

He said that the Abhisit-led government has a good image, but it didn't produce tangible results.

Local Thai pro-government "Red-shirt" leader killed

BANGKOK, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- A local Thai pro-government "Red- shirt" leader, close to a minister, was killed in northern province of Phrea on Saturday, local media reported. Udomsup Thammuang was found dead in front of his computer with his throat slit by a knife in a shop in Phrea's Muang district around 11 a.m. local time, police said.

Udomsup was a local Red-shirt leader and a canvasser for the ruling Pheu Thai party's MP. Moreover, he was a close aid of Education Minister Worawat Uaapinyakul, The Nation online reported.

The police have not yet concluded the cause of the crime, but hinted that it likely to be caused by political motivation as Udomsup was now a canvasser for a candidate for local administrative body.

Having red shirts in as 'advisors' or 'secretaries' is Thaksin's way of putting in hard-line commissars to firstly report back to him that ministers are not straying from the Thaksin line and secondly kick them out at first sign of disobedience. Remember he has ministers' undated resignation letters in his pocket. The thuggery is applied to the PT. Know their place. Their sole function is to get Thaksin back.
