YAOUNDE, CAMEROON (BNO NEWS) -- At least 28 people have been killed and several others have been injured after a bus and a truck collided on a highway in southwest Cameroon over the weekend, state-run media reported on Tuesday.

The accident happened on Saturday when a passenger bus carrying 35 people collided head-on with a truck on a highway between Yaounde, Cameroon's capital, and Douala. The truck was carrying fruit and other goods.

State-run media reported that at least 28 people had been killed as of Monday afternoon, while seven others remain in a critical condition at Younde Central Hospital. The condition of the truck driver was not immediately released.

According to police, the accident happened when the truck was attempting to overtake another vehicle when it collided head-on with the passenger bus. An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.

According to the most recent figures released by the Cameroon government, around 1,000 people die every year in road accidents in the African country. There were 990 fatalities and 2,471 injuries on the road in 2007.

The Yaounde-Douala highway is considered the country's most dangerous road, along with the Douala-Bafoussa and Yaounde-Bafoussa highways, where the majority of fatal accidents occur.
