Luggage On A Longboat?

Featured Replies

We are looking into going to Tha Ton by bus from Chiang Mai and then taking a longboat to Chiang Rai. Main purpose of this is to see the river and experience the countryside.

However, we will each have a medium sized suitcase with us. Is this allowed on board and if so, would they get wet?

What do others do?

Thanks in advance!

I did this several years ago. Tha Ton is a great place to stay. Several resorts are right on the river there. Beautiful.

We both had med size backpacks. No problems at all. Stopped at a village to see silk weaving (touristy, but OK), then the hot springs to eat an egg cooked in the waters.

Beautiful trip! You will have no problems at all.

Thanks, but I'm just worried that a medium-sized suitcase is bigger than a backpack. Where do they store in on the boat? Does it get wet? Thanks again.

The boats are pretty big. You can either take a long tail or a raft. I think on the raft you spend the night somewhere as it's pretty slow...but would be really fun. These pics are from Tha Ton. The pic with the bridge is downtown. Two are the resort where we stayed...beautiful. Worth 2 nights there at least for sure. In that second pic, just around the bend is the border with Myanmar.

The baggage gets stacked up-front, where there might be a bit of spray, and it does also rain up here ! But any suitcase worth using is at-least shower-proof, isn't it ?

The boat-trip from Tha-Ton to Chiang-Rai leaves at 12.30 prompt, so catch the rattling steel-monster red-bus from Chang-Puak Bus-Station (not Arcade) at 08.00, or spend a night in Tha-Ton (no great hardship).

And the trip is definitely worth doing, IMO !
