Impossible to extradite Thaksin from Cambodia: Chalerm

Published on September 15, 2011

The government would not seek to extradite fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinwatra from Cambodia due to a lack of legal mandate, Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung said on Thursday.

"The extradition request for Thaksin is impossible," he said in reference to Thaksin's visit to Phnom Penh tomorrow.

Chalerm said the Democrat-led government had tried but failed to convince the Cambodian government to send back Thaksin.

He said the existing extradition provisions did not applied to Thaksin's conviction and two-year jail term.

Boonjong's MP status suspended

By The Nation

Bhum Jai Thai MP Boonjong Wongtrairat has suspended his duty pending the judicial review on his involvement in electoral fraud, Deputy House Speaker Charoen Chankomol said on Thursday.

Boonjong's job suspension is mandatory after the Supreme Court's Election Cases Division ruled on Wednesdy to review the Boonjong case.

In the prosecution writ, the Election Commission issued a red card to disqualify Boonjong's by-election victory in 2010 on grounds that he was involved in campaign violations.

Boonjong was accused of organising a trip for local officials from his Nakhon Ratchasima constituency to the Rayong seaside resort, which could be construed as vote-buying.

The EC ruled to remove his voting right for five years, tantamount to a ban to contest the elections.

Under the elections law, the EC ruling is subjected for the mandatory judicial review.

Should the high court endorse his disqualification, his party is liable to face the punishment by dissolution. The political party provisions prescribe for disbandment upon the campaign fraud conviction involving an executive.

Mom and pop shops to get a new business makeover

BANGKOK, 15 September 2011 (NNT)-The 4th retail market event is currently held at Impact Arena to help mom and pop shops evolve themselves to be more independent in the new business climate in which a one stop service is important.

Deputy Commerce Ministry Mr. Siriwat Kajornprasart said domestic consumption had changed over the years and it was important that the business sector adapt to this. He added that the government now focused on increasing domestic consumption rather than depending on export to offset economic balance.

He cited Makro for having a business model that the government was urging small retailers to follow suit. He expressed his belief that with the collaboration between the government and private sector, businesses in Thailand would be more sustainable.

The event is organized by Siam Makro Public Company Limited and is also aimed at gaining support for mom and pop shops from younger generation and to distribute incomes within the community. The event is taking place from today until this Sunday at Impact Arena Hall 1-2. However, it will only be open to public on the weekend while the first two days are dedicated to business owners who would like to enter the retail business and for them to talk with representatives in this industry.
