2015

As I understand it, in 2015 the Asean trade treaty comes into effect. This, supposedly based on the European Common Market, would allow free movement of goods and labour between the member states. Anyone know or have thoughts about this? I haven't found a single Thai who is aware of it although it will mean significant changes to this country. No more import duties, Cambodian labourers being here legally so can't be robbed of their wages and deported at the month's end, Philppinos with their English skills taking all the jobs in restaurants and entertainment venues, Singaporean and Malaysian civil engineers in charge of road building etc. What have the Thais to offer?

There won't be freedom of movement for labourers but many professionals will be able to take jobs in other ASEAN countries. And Thailand is going to attract many from other ASEAN countries who have the requisite professional and English-language skills. Additionally, having skills in the local languages will obviously be of benefit and I believe that some ASEAN countries have been preparing for this for up to 10 years, with Thai language programs offered at university level, for example, so that their graduates are prepared to compete in Thailand.

It's starting to register here, particularly with the realization that this year's new intake in the universities will be the first to be thrown into the new ASEAN market. But I don't think there's any awareness amongst the population at large.

Have ALL the ASEAN nations signed it or only some of them?
