Wild Fruits In The Jungle?

Featured Replies

Hello guys!

When I made a trip to Khao Raa (Koh Phangan), I've missed all the common trails and went through the wild jungle. That was a nice experience, but what I've noticed, there was absolutely no wild fruits there. Not even a single banana.

Does anybody know, is this normal for the jungle here or was it just a wrong place to look for fruit trees? I thought that the jungle must have at least some wild fruit trees. Are there locations where they exist?

I don't mean any private areas. I just want to make a hiking trip into the jungle for several days and take no food with me, eating only wild fruits (and lasting on fruits is certainly possible, I've tested it). But now I'm not sure if there are places in the jungle for that.

There is food in the jungle but you'd better be extremely knowledgeable as some are poisonous and some are not. Better to take food with you than rely on inexpert knowledge.

I was expecting to base on the knowledge of the fruits I see at markets actually. I saw some berries at the top of Khao Raa, but I'm not crazy enough to try those without knowing what they are.

No, cultivated fruits tend to not grow wild, they are cultivated. There are wild bananas but they don't produce any edible fruit. Yes, there are locals who could live off the land but they've been living there their entire lives.

Best just bring some food with you.

Indeed, and in fairness, you will never be that far from a 7-11 anyway. I wonder if the word 'jungle' really is the right one to describe the few square km boundaried by roads.:ermm:

(Is boundaried a proper word?)

Rather than fruit, you might want to go with insects and reptiles. Look carefully and I'm sure you will find plenty of those.

Of course, some of those can be deadly as well (if bit or stung, properly cooked they should be completely edible).

Good Luck.

Actually a wide part of KPG is formed by mountains deeply covered by forest (not exactly jungle) and in some case by a real rainforest with very tall and old Dipterocarpus trees.

BTW is not exactly easy to find a 7 eleven in any corner, although KPG now counts 11 convenience stores and one small Lotus.

I trek almost daily and I bring with me my food and drinks and I try don't touch, kill, break or eat anything on my passage.

;)

Guess you've never been out in the jungle then. Suggest you give it a try, and then come back here with some real info.

I have. I just wouldn't use the word jungle as I do not think it accurately describes the place. Semantic perhaps.

Then you haven't been that far.

Then you haven't been that far.

Ok. I admit it, it is a jungle. My apologies.

your post belies a limited knowledge of koh phangan.

there are vast stretches of inland mountainous jungle, as is made clear by the number of tourists who believe the same thing you do and head out for a day trip and get horribly lost.
