Thai Science Ministry To Hand Out Plastic Boots To Flood Victims

The report takes an initiative long overdue and presents it in a mocking tone. Credit for the initiative goes back to the last floods when PM Abhisit deployed health teams. One of their recommendations was to get people to stop walking about in flip flops or barefoot. The number of infected foot wounds and parasite infections was in the thousands. These infections gummed up the health system, caused serious debilitating injuries and interefered with worker productivity.

The recommendation in the report after the flood was to provide protective foot wear. This being Thailand, the report was forgotten after the flood crisis.. Now someone woke up and said, whoa, we better act on the recommendations. At its heart, it is intended to prevent injury. The reason why such a small number are being tried out now is to see if there will be compliance and people will wear the footwear. If the boots are not worn, there is no point in distributing them. The people that came up with the recommendations were in office during the Abhisit government (as well as previous administrations). It's not a stupid idea. This effort should not be politicized as it received all party support.

give it 3 weeks and these boots will be for sale in local markets. there is no way they will all be handed out to deserving people. there is money to be made here.

money is the number 1 priority, the thai people and the terrible flood ordeals they are going through.......second. same ol, same ol. :annoyed:

Brilliant ... just brilliant ... boots ... and not just boots, but "new inventions" ... what a powerhouse of inventiveness, Thailand.

While wading boots might be important to reducing water-borne disease and infections, it seems quite trite in the face of the massive suffering in flooded areas. 5,000 pairs of boots don't even rise to the standard of a band-aid on the massive projectile bleeding from which the Thai farmers are suffering. How people as this can tolerate such hollow offerings is simply beyond modern civilized society ...(ahhhmmm, the explanation there is pretty obvious) ... the feudal class of ruling Thais must be thankful the prai are still kept submissive and passified.

Jeez, suppressing the cynicism is just too difficult when a dysfunctional society as Thailand serves something as this up for public consumption.

The entitled class of ruling Thais are ginning-up press about plastic boots, keeping the suppressed and oppressed Thais diverted to treating the symptoms of the problem, rather than treating the root causes of the problem.

But, this won't keep up forever before they rise once again.

Sad.

Accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit and Transport Minister Sukampol Suwannathat, the prime minister arrived at Ban Mi district and was briefed by Lopburi governor Chartchai Promlert that all eleven districts were declared disaster zones and flooding was likely to remain for the next two months.

The governor asked the government to increase compensation for crops damaged by flood, as the 2,222 baht compensatory money per rai (0.4 acre) was not adequate.

News this morning of rampant corruption in the Yingluck government's 2,222 Baht Per Rai scheme with farmers saying they had to pay between 4,000 baht and 30,000 baht of their total receipts to village heads.

So, for the Governor, by all means this is inadequate and more tax funds should be given to the farmers, who will duly forward the inadequate amounts to the village heads.

2,222 baht x 7.5 million (number of rai of farmland just announced that have been destroyed) = ?

Nice these boots, very useful if flooding is less than two feet of water. Mind you having to wear them for two months or more might not be too healthy either :ermm:

Possibly unique insofar as although (to untrained observers of local culture) they may resemble boots worn by fishermen the world over for the last 300 years, these are manufactured using a special "process" that whilst costing more money, nevertheless delivers all sorts off 'benefits", not necessarily to the comprehension of the wearer.

Agriculture Minister orders a probe into flood money distribution

BANGKOK 4 October, 2011 (NNT) - Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Theera Wongsamut has ordered an urgent probe into the money distribution to flood victims following complaints of fraud.

The Minister has assigned the Department of Agricultural Extension director-general to take charge of the investigation aimed at searching for officials demanding commission for the distribution of assistance budget.

Theera said he personally believed that the Ministry’s civil servants were not involved in the fraud. Irregularities could have occurred in the final process of the cash distribution. Still, he admitted that some public officials were unscrupulous. The Minister added that officials of this type would be held accountable for their actions.
