BANGKOK, Sept 25 – Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva urged all sectors to create a culture of honesty and not to give in to bribery in an anti-corruption campaign on Sunday.

The prime minister and the opposition leader, joined by Senate speaker Gen Teeradej Meepien and Pongsak Assakul, acting chairman of Anti-Corruption Center, led the public and representatives from 30 organisations on a march from Lumpini Park to Silom Road.

The Prime Minister led a vow to oppose all forms of corruption, create a culture of honesty and stick to good governance in doing duties to prevent corruption and bribery.

She led participants to pledge not to abuse power by cheating and exploiting the public’s interest for their own benefits, but to strictly respect and abide by regulations and law.

Meanwhile, the Democrat leader suggested the prime minister help farmers in the government’s rice mortgage scheme, as a number of farmers may not receive compensation.

Many parties are concerned about possible corruption in the rice mortgage scheme which involved a large amount of money, he said.

Ms Yingluck said she would assign Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Kittiratt Na Ranong to oversee that issue.

Mr Abhisit also said during Sunday’s anti-corruption campaign that all sectors have to join forces in the campaign and the Democrat Party will scrutinize possible instances of corruption to protect the country’s interest.

The rice mortgage scheme is of concern for potential corruption, while the tax cut scheme for first-time home buyers does not really help the poor, he said. (MCOT online news)

COALITION AGAINST CORRUPTION

All urged to join anti-corruption walk

By The Nation

All Thais are invited to join a walk against corruption today, which will be led by the Stock Exchange of Thailand and 28 private organisations which recently formed the Coalition Against Corruption.

A source from the coalition said that at least 5,000 participants are expected at Lumpini Park, at 6.30am, mostly being employees of the participating organisations.

"We indeed expect at least 10,000, to show our power against the corruption," she said.

The general public is being urged to join.

The private sector is convinced that the political instability that has swamped Thailand in the past five years stems from widespread corruption.

The Office of Securities and Exchange Commission is a strong ally of this coalition. The officials and staff wear the anti-corruption T-shirt on Fridays

start with the civil servants (with police force as the first one). But that would need increasing their wages at the same time, to give them incentive.

the red tape is one of the reasons, why people try to cut corners and offer bribes, so overhaul of the law is also needed, but it's a long process.

as to the former pm taking part in the march and suspecting a possible corruption with the rice scheme and democrats scrutinising corruption are a little mouthful, as his government did nothing for 2.5 years at power.

also criticising the new government tax credits for the first time house buyers is just taking any opportunity, like this march against corruption, to squable. He should leave is to parliamentary sessions, because his attitude doesn't help to create a unity about the cause, across political divisions. But he would never learn.

funny, how one person can say different, contradicting statements:

"said that at least 5,000 participants are expected ... We indeed expect at least 10,000"

Maybe he is trying to be helpful like the last opposition party was. He had some wonderful teachers there.

Good to see the government and the opposition both working together to reduce the corruption in Thailand, an issue that has been a concern of the electorate for years, I wish them every success

I also wish them every success. Thai democracy and society as a whole are not going anywhere until corruption is reigned in.

As I said before, the government taking a stand against corruption is the pot calling the kettle black. Corruption is the name of the game.
