Legal Advice Before Marrying Thai

Featured Replies

The division of assets upon divorce or death, seems to be a very grey and complicated area - and there's a lot of advice on the forum but best to seek legal advice firsthand right ? My question is - as a British National planning to marry a Thai, can I sort out all the necessary legal affairs (to ensure everything is in correct order, should there be a divorce/death, unlikely but I want to make sure everything is in order, to be safe and save problems) well there are lots of firms in Thailand (ie: Sunbelt, Siam Legal etc) can they take care of thing regarding the Thai legal side of things, and UK side of things?

Or do I need to consult a lawyer based in the UK too? ( I am going to UK next week so would be good to know beforehand if I need to make preparations there or can do it all in Thailand through somebody like Sunbelt/ Siam Legal)

PS We will be marrying in Thailand not UK

Thanks

UK lawyer for UK stuff, Thai lawyer for Thai stuff.

Regarding death, under Thai law making a will is the best thing to do. For assets in the UK you would need a will according to UK law, registered in the UK. There might be some lawfirms in Thailand who can do this.

Have each will refer to the other with each specifically stating that the UK will is dispositive relative to the UK property/assets, and the Thai will is dispositive relative to the Thai property/assets.

Thanks if anybody out there has recommendations for lawyers in the UK, who have experience of marriages with Thais please let me know,

Also, what is the best way to find a good law firm that caters for farangs. Apart from the more well known ones, such as the ones that sponsor this site, any other recommendations or ways to find them? As have no clue where to begin, thanks

It also depends on the area you are living in. For the Isaan, Isaanlawyers has a good reputation.
