Gnome Vs Kde

Is there any significant difference between the Gnome and KDE desktops? I started out with Mandrake (Gnome default) and now I'm playing with SUSE (KDE default). I am having a bit of trouble sorting out what are the differences between desktops vs what are the differences between default distro software, because basically everything is new.

Overall, I like the software packaged with Mandrake better (or perhaps I should say, I found it easier to comprehend).

Gnome vs KDE...does it matter? Any views?

Probably not. I use KDE because that is what I have been using for many years. It has every feature that I want and a hugh support group with lots of applications available. My experience with Gnome is limited to playing with it a little but going back to KDE.

The bottom line is whatever you are comfortable with or used to, they both do a good job.

Gnome application run fine in KDE, and KDE applications run fine in Gnome.

Thus you can use whatever you prefer.

KDE has a bigger userbase, and more developers, such a more steady development. But Gnome is alive as well.

Gnome is currently trying to reduce what you see on the screen, in order to avoid to confuse the user. KDE has more features, and is not afraid to show them. That is probably what you noticed.

I do like more having more features available, and not hidden from me, so I do prefer the KDE desktop.

Also, as a programmer, you probably prefer the object oriented design of KDE, based on C++. It is quite easy and fast to develop KDE applications. I looked at programming Gnome before switching to KDE. Gnome was more a C hacking style programming, while I prefer modern object oriented C++ style programming.

In a business environment I would strongly prefer KDE, because the admin can lock the user desktop (using the kiosk tool) to avoid that the user can mess it up, which might save numerous hours of technical support for the admin, trying to find which configuration the user did play with.

But whatever you choose, you can't go too wrong. Later, your personal preferences might let you prefer one or the other.

hi'

I use Suse as many knows, and with Gnome, I used to work with kde, but it reminded me too much windoz, I used kde from the first version and later when moved to Suse I change to Gnome to have more desktop space and all tools are easily lauched anyway :D

I also like enlightment, light and fast but you may need to know a few command line :D

the best of Linux is, you have the choice of the interface you are using for working :D

it's not the case of every OS :o or pay for a skin changer :D
