BANGKOK, September 28, 2011 (AFP) - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has net assets worth 541 million baht ($17 million), an anti-corruption body said Wednesday, far less than the wealth of her fugitive brother Thaksin.

Yingluck's nine-year-old son has 4.4 million baht while her common law husband declared 76.8 million baht in assets, along with debt of 369.7 million baht, according to the independent National Counter Corruption Commission.

Yingluck, whose assets include property and other investments, is not the richest member of her cabinet -- that place goes to science and technology minister Plodprasop Suraswadi with 963 million baht.

Before taking office, Yingluck was president of Thai real estate firm SC Asset Corp, and previously held various positions within her brother Thaksin's business empire.

In February 2010, Thailand's Supreme Court confiscated $1.4 billion of Thaksin's wealth -- more than half his fortune -- for abuse of power.

Thaksin, a former telecoms tycoon who lives overseas in self-imposed exile, remains a hugely divisive figure in Thailand, where he was convicted of corruption in his absence in 2008.

His "Red Shirt" supporters held two months of opposition protests in Bangkok last year that triggered the worst civil violence in decades and ended in a military crackdown which left more than 90 people dead.

In an attempt to prevent corruption, all Thai politicians must publicly declare their assets to the National Counter Corruption Commission within one month after assuming office, and again after leaving office.

Anyone found to have submitted false asset declarations faces a five-year ban from public office.

Former premier Abhisit Vejjajiva, whose party suffered a resounding defeat in a June election, reported his assets increased by three million baht during more than two years in office, to 54 million baht, the commission said.

The richest, Science Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi, has Bt963 million while the poorest, Deputy Transport Minister Kittisakdi Hatthasongkroh has a mere Bt3.9 million to his name.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra ranks second in fortune with the family’s net worth of Bt541 million.

Yingluck’s personal assets are worth Bt536 million, including Bt13 million in cash, Bt381 million in 13 bank accounts, Bt81 million in investment portfolios, Bt65 million in land plots and Bt162 million in real estate.

Her common-law husband Anusorn Amornchat has Bt76 million in assets and Bt369 million in liabilities. Their minor son Supasek Amornchat has Bt4.3 million in assets.

Among five deputy prime ministers, Chumpol Silapa-archa has a highest net worth of Bt441 million, followed by Chalerm Yoobamrung with Bt178 million, Yongyuth Wichaidit with Bt75 million, Kittiratt Na-Ranong with Bt59 million and Kowit Wattana with Bt27 million.

Defence Minister Yuthasak Sasiprapha’s assets are valued at Bt380 million.

Finance Minister Thirachai Phuvanatnaranubala’s wealth of Bt113 million stlightly trails behind his deputy Wirun Techapaiboon’s Bt166 million. Thirachai’s another deputy, Boonsong Teriyapirom, has Bt4.4 million.

Two PM’s Office ministers, Surawit Khonsomboon and Kitsana Seehalak, declare Bt99 million and Bt17 million in their respective assets.

Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul is worth Bt45 million in assets while Social Development and Human Security Minister Santi Promphat has Bt18 million.

Agriculture Minister Theera Wongsamut’s net worth is Bt5 million and his deputy Pornsak Jarernprasert has Bt31 million.

Trasport Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat has Bt46 million while his deputy Chatt Kuldiloke is worth Bt174 million.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Preecha Rengsomboonsuk’s fortune is estimated at Bt31 million and Information and Communication Technology Minister Anudith Nakornthap has Bt11 million.

Energy Minister Pichai Naripthaphan is worth about Bt193 million. Two deputy Commerce ministers, Poom Sarapol and Siriwat Kachornprasart, are worth Bt43 million and Bt26 million respectively.

Two deputy Interior ministers, Chuchart Hansaward and Thanit Thienthong, have Bt123 million and Bt43 million in their respective assets.

Justice Minister Pracha Promnok has Bt279 million. Labour Minister Phadermchai Sasomsap’s assets are valued at Bt32 million while Culture Minister Sukumol Kunplome’s wealth is estimated at Bt82 million.

Education Minister Woravat Auapinyakul has Bt24 million while his two deputies, Bunruen Srithares and Surapong Eungampornwilai, have Bt28 million and Bt216 million respectively.

Public Health Minister Wittaya Buranasiri’s assets are worth Bt11 million and the wealth of his deputy Torphong Chaiyasarn is estimated at Bt6 million.

Industry Minister Wannarat Charnnukul has the net worth of Bt238 million.

BT381 million in 13 bank accounts could be other investments such as mutual trusts, REITs, structured equities etc etc (other than the Bt81 million in investment portfolios, those could be with fund managers etc). If you had Bt536 million, how would you diversify your portfolio?

In my line of work, I come across many ordinary Thais who have in excess of 10 million baht in simple savings accounts. How do I know this? A certain cash balance is required by a lot of European embassies when applying for a tourist visa. This evidence is submitted to the respective consulars in the form of bank statements and the funds have to have been in the account for a certain amount of time (not dissimilar to the 800k baht requirement for a retirement visa). You might very well be surprised at how rich the Thai middle class really is.

Former interior minister Chavarat Chanveerakul has Bt260 million net while his former deputy Boonjong Wongtrairat reported Bt195 million assets and his wife's Bt36.26 liability. Another former deputy interior minister, Thaworn Senneam, has Bt106 million.

Former commerce minister Porntiva Nakasai has Bt116 million net assets.

The NACC also announced the declared assets of 498 MPs. Matubhum Party leader General Sonthi Boonyaratglin has Bt61 million, Rak Santi leader Police Capt Purachai Piumsomboon has Bt290 million, Rak Thailand leader Chuvit Kamolvisit has Bt864 million while the only MP from New Democracy Party, Patcharin Manpan, has Bt900,000 liability.

Among the red shirt leaders from Pheu Thai Party, Jatuporn Promphan and Pichit Cheunban have Bt8 million each.

Pheu Thai MP Jarupan Kuldiloke has the most assets worth Bt199 million. Natthawut Saikua has Bt15 million, Weng Tojirakarn has Bt21 million, Kokaew Pikulthong has Bt74 million, Karoon Hosakul has Bt53 million, Jirayu Huangsap has Bt14 million, Wiputhalaeng Pattana-poomthai has Bt65 million.

It's hard to hate on Yingluck. She's something of a brilliant delight - she's taken to politics so well, I'm shocked she's managed to stay out of the game until now.

I can't help but imagine Yingluck is everything the McCain campaign hoped Palin might be; until Palin started throwing down with the USSR from her balcony etc.

As for the thread topic, numbers have been done before. Unverifiable numbers, are kind of a bore. But it is kind of ridiculous when she has to pander to silliness about her 'extravagant' meals, and whatnot. She's a multi-millionaire. She's probably not going to be slumming it with her supporters, although they seem kind of in two minds about whether they want their heroes to be slumming it with them, or whether they admire their heroes for splashing the cash.

You know that and I know that, but when I talk to Northern villagers they will swear that Abhisit stole more than 10 Thaksins ever did. They saw it on the Red Channel.
