BANDA ACEH, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- Authorities have located the crash site of a medium-sized passenger plane which crashed in the western region of Indonesia on Thursday, but rescue workers have been unable to reach the site. There are hopes of survivors.

The turboprop-powered Casa C-212 Aviocar belonging to PT Nusantara Buana Air had taken off from Polonia Airport in Medan of North Sumatra province with 18 people on board when it crashed in the Bahorok area of Langkat District, located in the same province. The aircraft was heading to Southeast Aceh.

While aerial photographs showed the aircraft largely intact, helicopters have not been able to reach the site due to bad weather conditions. Ground teams have been trying to cross rugged terrain and thick forest to reach the downed aircraft as well, the Jakarta Globe reported.

Lieutenant Colonel Heri Rustandi, a local military commander, said the combined emergency team made up of soldiers and civilians might be forced to rappel down from a helicopter in order to reach the crash site. Teams rappelled down from choppers around 300 meters (984 feet) away from the crash site in previous attempts, but they were unable to make it to the site.

The rescue operation was halted on Friday evening when night fell, but there is new hope for survivors. According to media reports, the mother of one of the passengers received a brief phone call following the crash. The passenger reportedly said they were all safe, but other details were not available.

With 14 passengers and four crew members, including the pilot, co-pilot, and two technicians, the aircraft took off from Polonia Airport at around 7:30 a.m. local time on Thursday and was scheduled to reach its destination at 8 a.m., Southeast Aceh District Air Transportation chief Basri previously said.

The crew of the aircraft was identified as pilot Kamal, co-pilot Budiono and technicians Nico M and Foo Sutopo. The fourteen passengers include ten adults, two children and two babies.

The Casa C-212 Aviocar is a medium-sized transport aircraft designed and built in Spain for civil and military use.
