You can apply up to 30 days before the due date. The extension always start when your current permission to stay ends, so you don't lose any days.

It's good to always do it at least a couple of weeks before, just in case there is a problem or new requirement or you misunderstand something. My most recent renewal required a surprise flight up to Bangkok for some paperwork from my embassy. Not a big problem as I was several weeks early - but if it had been only a few days before expiration . . .
