How Have You Been Treated In Thailand ?

Featured Replies

Hi Ladies in Thailand !

I have been living in Thailand for 15 years and some how I think I learned how people treat ladies. As there was something happened to me which up set me greatly, I just wonder how you have been treated in general ? OK ? not fairly ? I am an Asian woman. but not Thai. Do you think this effect ?

ppl can treat u well or bad ,it is depends on your personality . (just my opinion ) i feel fine here.

I agree with little muppet, I've lived here for more than 20 years and have found that if I approach people and issues in a good natured, pleasant and polite manner, thats what I get in return. Very rarely (ie count on one hand) have I encountered truly rude and unpleasant people but usually, most people are quite friendly.

There is a saying in English, "you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar" and this is true everywhere

The only times I've been treated poorly in Thailand are in major tourist places (Patong beach, Ao Nang, Khao San Rd, etc) Understandably, I guess, considering the rude foreigners they deal with daily, though I still don't think that makes it right.

I am not treated poorly by my in-laws, though I am treated different by the ones that don't know me very well. It does bother me when they make special exeptions for me, or single me out. I know they are doing it with good intentions, but I wish they wouldn't. My mother-in-law knows that it bothers me, so she makes sure to let everyone know when she sees it happening, lol!

Meyori, I think I can relate to you.

Some instant examples: When you make a traffic mistake and they think you're Thai, they are less friendly and forgiving than when they realise you're a foreigner. Then they even apologise for having given you a frown / angry face or having used the horn.

In the West being casual is the way to go, hierarchy is not as strong in daily life as it is here. What I learned here is to be nice to a certain extend towards lo-So Thais. Once you've crossed a line and you're too amicable to their level, they lose in a way respect for you. It took me actually a while to see situations through their eyes.

"Oh you're not Thai? I thought you were Thai!" Once they find out you're foreigner, the approach changes, it is very subtle, but you can tell by the body language and expression in the face. Still very friendly and with a smile, but a subtle mask appears to keep distance.

Meyori, I wonder what made you confused. What was the situation like?
