In the process of renewing my auto insurance on my one year old car was surprised to discover that they will not insure the car for more than 70% of its original cost for fire, theft, etc. Am told this is standard Thai insurance policy. True? Just surprised since in the US it is covered up to "replacement cost" what ever that is. Just curious. Probably a TIT thing.

If you go to the government place for registration of cars and driver licenses. Go straight in passing the building, on your left side you have a coffeeshop and a restaurant. To the left of them there is a little shop for copying and for photos. Talk to them, they have contact with many different insurance companies. Before lunch you will find a farang in the shop but his wife is also quite good in english. Hope they can help you find out what the rules are!

Hi Scorpio, yes that's right, motor insurance in Thailand will only insure up to 70/75% of the stated price, for new or 2nd hand cars.
