PARIS (BNO NEWS) -- French President Nicolas Sarkozy and first lady Carla Bruni on Wednesday had their first child together, according to media reports on Thursday.

Bruni, 43, born in Turin, Italy, gave birth to the baby girl, whose name remains unkown, at around 8 p.m. local time at the small and private Clinique de la Muette in western Paris. President Sarkozy, 56, was returning from a meeting held in Frankfurt, Germany when the child was born.

Sarkozy and Bruni married on February 2, 2008 at the Elysee Palace after meeting only three months earlier at a dinner party in November 2007. Their marriage has been closely followed by the media as Bruni is also an entertainment star, being an actress, former model and singer.

The pregnancy was first confirmed in July and the baby girl is their first child together although Sarkozy has three children from two previous marriages. Bruni has one son from a previous relationship.

The presidential palace did not comment on the reports, although the Kremlin in Moscow said Russian President Dmitry Medvedev had sent his congratulations to Sarkozy and his wife.
