Thousands of flood-affected people converge on “dry” Pattaya

PATTAYA: -- Although it is something Pattaya should not necessarily be proud of, a mini-boom is taking place at this time as thousands of residents from around Thailand converge on Pattaya which has remained largely unaffected by the terrible flooding experienced in Bangkok and Central Thailand provinces. We spoke with a number of drivers who confirmed they had come to Pattaya from Bangkok and local Hotels and Guest Houses have reported high occupancy rates. Acute shortages of food and other provisions due to flood-affected supply routes has now been compounded by the extra people looking to purchase items in supermarkets and convenience stores. Major routes around the city which are experiencing heavy traffic throughout the day and peak times, especially at around 6pm, are seeing major traffic congestion problems, especially on the main Sukhumvit Road
