Bangkok's Residents Flee Thai Floods

Heavy congestion on the sidewalk of Soi Nana in direction to Sukthumvit Road, as all hookers and pimps are now going back to Isaan for a few weeks.

Which route they'll be able to reach Isaan?? Gimme a break, upper Viphavadee (starting Laksi\DonMuang and up) is completely under water. Boats are there, but not cars/trains/buses.

And this is the main way to the North.

If they want to go Isaan now - they must have a huge hook (go to Chantaburi or even Trat, and then go up North). That will be a huge voyage and huge expenses.

As long as they can get out of Bangkok on either the Chonburi-Bangkok or Bangna Trad Highways and make it to around Chachongsao they will be able to reach one of the four routes into Issaan from Prachinburi or Sa Kaeo provinces. No need to go down as far as Chantaburi or as far east as that Chantaburi-Buriram route (although the northern half of that route remains a sensible choice for anyone going to points east of Buriram).

I'm sure the bar girls and freelancers are capable of blagging a ride somehow to just about anywhere. I'll bet many of them have at least 4 foreign-based boyfriends wiring them the taxi fare home as we speak.

No, no, no. the boyfriends think that they are already home waiting for them to come back. "You send me money, I don't work bar, I stay home wait for you."
Curious, any comments on the number of people still in the city? What is like around the soi Nana area? Traffic situation?

Most people including myself are still in Bangkok. Why? because most of Bangkok has NO flooding. Thais are being made to panic by missleading mass media reporting in the Thai media. We have been promised flooding now for several days but apart from the outskirts in the North and east Bangkok is still dry and I will predict will remain so.
I have read in the paper today that the most dangerous time for Bangkok to flood will be on Saturday at 6pm, I plan to go to the Chao Praya river to watch this ficticious event and will return home and write to you again when I am proved right. I had a very similar response from Thai Visa members who were adamant that Mr Abhisit would win the last election I hope that you will have the courage to appologize to me when I am proved to be right.

Be really brave, carry a brick in each pocket.

Pattaya is now chock full of Fortuner SUVs with Bangkok license plates. Seems a bit unfair that the rich people are enjoying a week at the beach, while the poor people left behind are swimming in turds. Oh well, guess that is the way it has always been...

And so is Chaing mai! I dont have anything against Bangkok people but there driving leaves a lot to be desired!

I drove down Thong Lor at 17.20 and it was virtually empty. The lightest traffic I have ever seen that time of day, so I am sure many people from this area have left the city.

I live close to the Ivy which has been declared as one of the areas they will protect so let's see.

I would like to escape from the city before it is too late, but the wife is still required to go to work in the office every day. But now it´s already too late, as all affordable rooms and apartments in Pattaya and Hua-Hin are long gone. They don´t even care to answer your request.

It is still not too late. You can cross the border to Malaysia.

"Bangkok is 100% safe" - said PM earlier

"We are to guarantee that Don Mueang is well protected" - she also said

And even "Defence Minister confident Grand Palace will be spared from flood"

And "This will not affect to tourism!!" - said TAT chief just a week ago...

Shit. All of their speaches. All of them themselves.:annoyed:

You know from which mouth these populist promises are coming from. Big brother Taksin was even worse. To me no surprise and her tears will not solve the problem! But one thing is sure: I never have seen in my 21 years of residence here such a bad and disastrous incompetent and unacknowledgeable water management in Thailand as under the actual government. Bunch of incompetent politicians, red shirt parasites in positions they even not know what this means... And the high nosed attitude from these Shinawatras that they know better than the major from Bangkok Sukhumband!!!! Shame Shinawatra's: all the blame is on you! I hope they will ever investigate this poor management (leading to the dead of more than 370 people) after finishing the investigation of the killing of 91 arsonist-terrorists at the Rachaphrasong area. :bah:

If your coming to Pattaya please bring your empty re-fillable plastic water bottles or buy a kettle to boil water, as you will currently find no bottled water on the shelves in any shop here, big or small.

Not really correct. I was at Makro in Pattaya last night shopping, and they had lots of bottled water. Also plenty of fresh vegetables, which sort of surprised me. But not a can of tuna to be seen......

Nice to know, but it's not normally a place most Thais (and definately farangs) go for their regular food shopping. As for the lack of Tuna that's a bit unusual since in a few days time Bankokians will be able to fish from their windows.

Stocks of water are mostly gone in most places in Pattaya, I'm wondering how much water to stock - since I think boiled tap water in Pattaya is mostly safe.

Have noticed prices for things have gone up a bit to here at the local for other things too - such as beer.

Any thoughts?
Dont know why we should be so worried , everything dry near Onnut , just have enough water and food for the nest 2 weeks . Im ready.
Thanks a lot for contributing to the lack of food in Tesco Lotus On Nut (my local supermarket) I go there everyday. Have a look out of your window and you will see there is NO flooding! I blamed the Thais lack of education for their panic buying but as a Farrang what's your excuse?

I agree with you, but the trouble with panic buying is that once it starts, you eventually are left with few options but to join in or go empty handed. You hold off, and the shelves are empty. You join in, become part of the problem, and the shelves empty that tiny bit quicker but at least you've got something to eat. sad.gif

Can't buy the big bottles of drinking water in Lamphun now. I told my wife that would happen a few days ago and she didn't believe me ( now she does ).

I spent some time watching the Chao Phraya overflowing the wall, on the tv news this morning! I hope to be seeing an appropriate response from you on this thread, LOL.

The only pimps in Nana are the ones on vacation from London.

For an 'evacuated' city there seems to be a lot of people about!

I reckon most the people who do the real work in Bangkok are from the North or from the far suburbs, and their homes flooded weeks ago. And they are still here and working.

Yes, it's work if you want money here. The nanny state does not exist in Thailand!

Actually the Nana state exists in Thailand. If you want a little quick cash you go to Nana or get someone in the family to go.

:w00t: ha ha .... better have a beer and get ready for the "flood" of horrified reactions from the more sensitive TV readers.
