Special holidays may be extended: Pracha

Justice Minister Pracha Promnok said Saturday that he will consult Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra about extension of the special holiday period.

Pracha, head of the Flood Relief Operations Centre, said he would have to first discuss with the prime minister to determine whether the holidays would be extended and how many more days should be declared holidays.

He said the situation will have to be assessed on the daily basis.

The Cabinet has declared Saturday, Friday and Monday extra holidays to encourage Bangkok

residents to leave the capital ahead of expected flooding.

Bang Phlat almost totally submerged

ฺBANGKOK, 29 October 2011 (NNT) - Floods have submerged almost all parts of Bang Phlat district, forcing police officers to close nearly all the traffic lanes heading to the area while residents are constantly evacuating out.

At present, water level in the Chao Phraya River is rising continuously after several sections of the embankment along the river have broken. however, some sections have already been repaired up to more than one metre high.

Houses along Charan Sanitwong Road, mostly shops and accommodations, are now uninhabitable as dwellers are fleeing to live in other places. Tesco Lotus Bang Phlat branch, acting as the flood relief operations center in the area, is the only place selling goods to a lot of people stocking up necessities.

Meanwhile, the 2nd Infantry Battalion 1st Infantry Regiment Royal Guards has taken charge in providing boats and transports for public convenience.

Commerce to Ensure Enough Egg Supply in Bkk & Nearby Provinces

UPDATE : 29 October 2011

The permanent secretary of commerce says the ministry has coordinated with farm produce conglomerates to make sure there are enough supply of eggs to meet the demand in Bangkok.

Tesco Lotus plans to import millions of eggs from Malaysia to ensure there's sufficient supply.

Permanent Secretary of Commerce Yanyong Puangrach said large food suppliers, including CP group, Betagro and Kasemchai Farm, have been asked to speed up the distribution of chicken eggs from farms to marketplaces in Bangkok to combat the growing shortage.

Yanyong revealed CP group will supply hundreds of thousands of eggs to be sold at the Farmer's Market (Or Tor Kor) in Jatujak tomorrow (Oct 30). Betagrow and Kasemchai Farm are also in the process of organizing a marketplace to supply eggs to consumers at normal market prices. There are reports that a chicken egg now costs as much as 7-8 baht per egg.

The permanent secretary of commerce is confident there are enough eggs to meet the current demand. Tesco Lotus group is planning to import more than 3 million fresh eggs from Malaysia. Makro group is also planning to import approximately 200,000 eggs from Malaysia.

Internal Trade Department director Vacharee Vimuktayont says, in term of daily supply, there are as many as 25-26 million eggs in the market. However, a large part of the egg supply is unable to be transported into Bangkok due to the widespread floods. Many large scale department stores in Bangkok say they are unable to get to their merchandises which are left stranded at various distribution and logistics centers in flood-hit Ayutthaya Province. They are calling for military vehicles are used to transport the supplies from the distribution centers into Bangkok and nearby provinces. Help has been slow due to the high level of flood water. Vacharee believes more goods will be able to be transported from distribution centers once the flood water has receded to <1M deep.
