TingTawng Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Here's an example I saw yesterday:- https://www.google.com/search?aq=f&hl=en&gl=us&tbm=nws&btnmeta_news_search=1&q=thai+bride You will notice western media always calling a Thai woman married to a non-Thai man a "Thai bride" like she's a product.
aneliane Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 Because this is what she is taken for in the match making industry.
RichardL Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 It's really a slur on the husband - the implication being that she only married him to escape poverty in Thailand. Men with "Thai brides" are rarely respected unless it's shown theirs is a genuine marriage. It's always assumed it's not.
Semper Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 It's really a slur on the husband - the implication being that she only married him to escape poverty in Thailand. In many cases it's the truth.
thaimate Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 It's really a slur on the husband - the implication being that she only married him to escape poverty in Thailand. Men with "Thai brides" are rarely respected unless it's shown theirs is a genuine marriage. It's always assumed it's not. Doesnt it depend on the man in question and the woman ,you see holidaymakers come over here meet a girl in a bar fall madly in love and take her home ,its obvious to everyone what she was by her manner of dress and the men are often no better . but on the other hand if you are articulate ,your wife dresses modestly and is obviously educated i find that you are treated entirely differently by both Thai people and British alike.
BRichards Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 I I will say because in Thailand getting married to non Thai men is a career while in USA or other Western countries women still see money as a good trait but most are educated and have a career before they hook up. BR
bkkjames Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 (edited) My thai wife has a better education than poor old me (masters with honours from chula). She is referred to as mia farang among the thais-lol. Do I really care what the western media refer to our marriage about? Let's just say I care more about merc city and the dippers than a bunch of jealous people in the west. Next question please. Lol (Removed a typo that illustrated point number 1) Edited November 4, 2011 by bkkjames
BRichards Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 I have met some expat men who did marry a Thai wife where the wife does not speak English. I thought women love to talk and be heard? Thai wife is a label on the Thai women who are not educated and who mostly are after non Thai men.
aneliane Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 Some TV members can't read ... The OP is not making a comment on Thai women morality, he is pointed out that the word "Thai Bride" could be interpreted as reducing the lady to a product, a merchandise, which makes her a victim ie the contrary of a "money grabber".
bkkjames Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 My thai wife can speak 3 languages fluently BR, thai, english and spanish. Next stereotype please. This is fun. Better than flooding.
BRichards Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 In South America my Grand mothers maid spoke over 5 languages so what is the point? As I mentioned Thai bride is a title on the non educated, under paid Thai women who needs support. Women who view sex and passion as a currency! BR
metisdead Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 One post stereotyping western women in a derogatory manner has been removed: 7) Not to post slurs or degrading comments directed towards any group on the basis of race, nationality, religion, gender or sexual orientation.
aneliane Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 Can you all get real for one sec? Thai bride is a big business, try googling Thai Bride and you 88 millions hits. All over the world desperate men are coming to Thailand to get married. The real Estate market has sniffed it out and advertise their perfect place for your "Thai wive", with pictures of a white guy lounging with a Thai girl in the background. Everyone is making money out of selling Thai ladies to foreigners, from the spouse visa industry, prostitution of course, bars, restaurants but also electronics, washing machines, TV, cars are now also targeted to Thai brides couples. Even Hollywood with The Hangover 2 has acknowledged it, and made the not-so-good-looking-one of the bunch marry a beautiful Thai woman. Why is it so hard to admit your are part of an industry ?

geriatrickid Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 It is an appropriate term in this case. Momma's boy murders his Thai bride because she disturbed his action figures. Do you think she married him for his searing intellect or his independence, or his emotional stability?

Skill with languages is no indication of educational level. Good point! True, but her Degree with Honors does. Anyways, what is the point of this thread - OP worried about sitting in some high class lounge in the home country and someone saying - where did you meet your wife - and you reply "Soi Cowboy". Or I ordered my Thai Bride from the new IDea Catalog.... Why do you care what other people think? You married your Thai gal hopefully for love and not to lose face correct? Since it's ok to only comment on western men on here - I wonder if a western woman who has married (you know who you are ) a Thai Man gets the same crap - Thai Groom? Some people really need to get out more - get some fresh air....

Not be be a smart arse or anything. But this rule seems to be ok/broken everyday towards Thai's but not to westerners on here. Just an observation. Maybe you should change the rule to not post degrading or slurs towards Westerners. Thats my rant for the day

Kilgore Trout Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 Age difference can be a big sign, but I think the main issue is language. If the married couple can express themselves (whatever they want to say) and communicate effectively then we have to give the marraige the same credit we would in the west. If they cannot communicate at at least an adult level then I would say the marriage is suspect. No matter how much you feel "love" for someone, if you can not communicate you can not have a healthy relationship. Btw, I have also heard the term Russion bride many times before, so its not just Thailand.
DP25 Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 It is an appropriate term in this case. Momma's boy murders his Thai bride because she disturbed his action figures. Do you think she married him for his searing intellect or his independence, or his emotional stability? A bride is a woman about to be married or a newly wed. They'd been married for years and together since 2001. She is his wife or spouse. When it's used (usually seems to be in the UK press I see it, especially the Daily Mail, the Telegraph used the word wife) it is simply used as a slur to sensationalize a story and mock the people involved

I asked a very well traveled Thai ex if she thought about coming to Australia to live and she said no because people would assume she was a hooker she also said western men are easy to control in Thailand

When Communisms went down all those women started to need and want money now look at the porn industry full women coming from ex Communist countries. What we are dealing with is more about attraction then real love. Most people through out the world will never come close to true love.
