Thai Chamber of Commerce University: 700,000 Remain Unemployed During Flooding

As flooding continues, the Thai Chamber of Commerce University expects the number of unemployed could reach 700,000, which could lead to non-payment debt problems.

The government is advised to establish remediation measures as soon as possible.

Director of the Economic and Business Forecasting Center of the Thai Chamber of Commerce University, Thanawat Ponwichai disclosed that the current flood situation will increase the number of unemployed by 100,000 to 300,000.

When the number of temporary employees is considered, the number grows to 600,000 or 700,000.

Remediation measures are expected to be established within six months.

The total damage from this year's severe flooding is estimated at approximately 350 - 450 billion baht.

The government must restore the situation as soon as possible by addressing the income problems of residents to stimulate the growth of country's economy, since residents losing their jobs could lead to non-payment debt problems.

Thanawat further said that since residents and small businesses are unable to acquire a source of investment funds or aid measures from the government such as tax incentives and other privileges, the government should provide micro financing such as village funds or community banks to make funds accessible to residents in remote areas.

Renovation Plan for Ayuthaya Temples Commence

The National Office of Buddhism has outlined restoration plans for the province's historical sites in the wake of the flood crisis.

National Office of Buddhism for Ayutthaya Province, Director Woradej Changboo, revealed that the recent inundation in the province has severely damaged 420 temples out of 505.

According to initial estimates, the restoration cost will be approximately 915 million baht.

Woradej said that his office will repair all damaged temples by repainting and restructuring the landscape within three months, while it's expected that the sermon hall and toilet restoration will be completed within one year.

In addition, archaeologists will thoroughly explore the damage and strengthen the historical sites.

He added that some temples are recovering and ready for visits.

Meanwhile, the low-lying World Heritage site Chaiwattanaram Temple is still under floodwater.

The water level has receded by only 30 centimeters.

The related agencies plan to repair the south defense wall and tar the road when the situation eases.

At the same time, the water level at the north end of the temple continues to recede.

It is expected that the water will be drained in about two days.

Other historical monuments such as Phra Si Sanphet Temple, Maha That Temple, and Rachaburana Temple have now dried out.

However, the old pagodas are still damp. They must dry before the repair operation can begin.

Many people have voiced concern that the flooding has tilted a number of pagodas.

Provincial National Historical Park Director Chainan Boossayarat clarified that most pagodas were tilted before the flood hit the area.

The agencies have decided not to straighten the pagodas as they could collapse.

image_201111101002488B6D7E1C-B38D-16D9-25B1D2716B1ADBDF.jpg

BANGKOK, Nov 10 -- The flood situation in some areas of Bangkok is stable, and some locations have improved after the waters partially receded due to floodwater diversions into the Chao Phraya River effectively reduced the volume of water in the capital.

The water level in Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road is declining, particularly at the Thai Rath newspaper offices, which saw a 20cm fall.

At Sutthisan intersection, the waters have dried out after the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) operated water pumps at full capacity on a 24-hour basis while the plan to divert water from Khlong Bang Sue to the Chao Phraya River was carried out effectively.

On Phahonyothin Road, the waters eased to 70cm deep, but at Ha Yak Lat Phrao intersection vehicles could not pass.

Meanwhile water from Khlong Lum Jiak overflowed to deluge Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's residence in Soi Yothinpattana 3 in Bueng Kum district. Workers used sandbags to block water overflowing from the drainage system.

In the west of Bangkok, Somdej Phra Pinklao Road from Somdej Phra Pinklao Bridge to Arun Amarin intersection reopened after water level was at 20-30cm high and from Arun Amarin intersection to the Baromrajchonnee intersection reopened as water was 10-15cm deep.

The Hydrographic Department of the Royal Thai Navy said that the water level of the Chao Phraya River at Royal Thai Navy Headquarters reached its highest level at 7.35am at 2.10 metres above mean sea level and would peak again at 4.56pm at 2.02 metres above mean sea level. (MCOT online news)

BMA Confirms Water Pumps Run at Full Capacity

The overflow from eastern Bangkok now has now reached King Rama II Road, the key route to the South.

Meanwhile, Bangkok's Drain and Sewerage Department maintains that its water pump devices are working at their full capacity.

Director of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration or BMA's Drain and Sewerage Department, Sanya Chinimitr, said his agency is running its water pumps at full capacity but some pumps need a break or time for repairs.

Sanya said the Flood Relief Operation Center has provided his agencies with 200 3-inch caliber water pumps and 100 4-inch caliber water pumps while those with larger calibers are still undergoing the installation process.

He added that the BMA's gigantic tunnels are now operating at 90 percent of their combined capacity, as the drainage gets interrupted by debris, so they must pause sometimes for cleanup and maintenance.

Sanya maintained that the riverside areas of Thonburi and Phra Nakhon District could face minor floods during the upcoming sea tide, but the situation will be containable.

Meanwhile, the flood situation in western Bangkok continues to spread wider, and the overflow has now flooded some parts of King Rama II Road.

Almost every alley of Ekkachai Road is flooded with 10 or 20 centimeters of water, and the entire intersection where Ekkachai and Kanchanapisek converge.

The water level at Mahasawat Canal has already exceeded the flood wall at the sluice gate of Thawee Watthana Canal by 5 to 15 centimeters, causing flooding on Bangbon 1, 3, and 5 roads, and Malithong Intersection of Wutthakard Road.

In eastern Bangkok, the water level in Saen Saeb Canal continues to rise, particularly at the section passing through Bang Chan District, while the water level at the area inside the big-bag levee went down by 25 centimeters.

The floodwater at the Thai Airways Cargo Office at Don Muang Airport has receded by 15 centimeters.

At the same time, the floodwater between Suthisarn Intersection and the Territory Defense Department is rising, and the level of the Rangsit Moat is expected to increase in 24 hours due to discharges from Bang Sue Canal.

Artists Join Hands in Making Electrical Leak Detection Tool

Four artists from RS Promotion have devoted themselves in volunteering to make a device that acts as an electrical leakage indicator to prevent people from being electrocuted in the floodwater.

Electrocution deaths are adding to Thailand's already steep death toll, as the nation's struggle with far-reaching floodwater drags on.

For this reason, students and professors from King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi's Bangmod campus have created an electrical leak detection instrument made from a wooden stick, to help ensure the safety of people in the government and private sectors such as soldiers, police rescue teams, doctors, and volunteers who help the flood victims.

They can use this tool to check electrical leaks in the water they are wading through.

The university also welcomes people interested in making the electrical leak detection instrument themselves, as the process is not complicated and the production cost is low.

Four artists from RD Promotion, Yoshi from C-Quint, Arm from Rookie BB, and X R-Siam and Nut R-Siam are helping to make the electrical leak detection instrument.

From October 27 to November 8, a total of 5,000 electrical leak detectors have been made.

From that number, 4,000 detectors have already been donated.

Thai Bev Rush to Distribute Drinking Water

The Thai Beverage Company conceded that the flood is disrupting transportation, causing water shortages.

As of now, the company is using water transportation to distribute bottled water in the market.

President of the Thai Beverage Public Company Limited, Thapana Siriwattanapakdi, says the ongoing flood is making goods transportation exceedingly difficult.

Consequently, water shortages are unavoidable, and bottled drinking water prices have skyrocketed.

As for Thai Beverage's factory in Ayutthaya Province, the flood has sealed its entrance for over two months.

The company's logistics system is disrupted, and it has turned to water transportation as an alternative way of distribution, which has increased production costs.

Yesterday, the company forwarded 1.8 million bottles to nine distribution centers under the Blue Flag policy.

The fair began yesterday and will go until November 17.

Thapana added that the company can protect its three main production bases stationed at Bang Barn District, Wang Noi District, and Khun Canal respectively.

However, their factory located at the Navanakorn Industrial Estate received the most damage, costing more than one billion baht.

People who wish to buy drinking water at the Blue Flag event are required to display their identification cards to take a queue number.

In addition, each person is limited to 60 bottles or 5 packs. Each pack costs 84 baht.

The Blue Flag event is being held in various places such as Siam Niramit Theatre, King Rama IX Royal Park, Pak Kred, Wongwien Yai, Lumpini Park, and Sirikit National Conventional Center.

On November 17, the event will also be held at the Larn Kon Muang courtyard in front of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

All income generated will be donated to flood victims through the Chaipattana Foundation.

Flooding in Many Provinces Allay

The flood situation in several provinces begun to improve but many residents remain in need of relief.

The flood situation in Bangrakam District of Phitsanulok Province started to improve after floodwater that was once two meters deep has receded to a non-critical level.

Some farmers have begun to plow the ground to plant rice. Some used water pumps to drain excess water and prepare the soil for new planting.

Flood levels at the district office went down to 8.66 meters, still 1.50 meter above the critical level, while the Yom River is receding by 20 to 30 centimeter daily.

In Ang Thong, the flood situation is constantly improving, but the water is still deep.

Residents in Baan Ree subdistrict remain affected by water as deep as two meters that has been there for months.

Meanwhile, the Chao Phraya River's water level in the province has decreased by 2 to 5 centimeters a day.

Residents who live in higher areas are able to return to their homes, while the basin areas remain flooded.

Various local administration organizations hosted boat-racing competitions to relieve the locals of stress.

In Pathum Thani, the water level near Saphan Daeng Dam in Thanyaburi District has gone down by 20 centimeters.

However, locals still must travel by boat at a cost 200 to 300 baht per trip.

Leeches started to attack people, but the situation improved since the Irrigation Department installed 21 pumps at the Khlong 12 Canal sluice gate to syphon water from Rangsit Canal.

The Rangsit-Nakhon Nayok Road from Khlong 4 Canal to Nakhon Nayok is open to traffic, while the section of the road from Khlong 1 to 3 canals is only passable for large vehicles.

Traffic on the Motorway from the Wang Noi area is open, while traffic on both inbound and outbound of Vibhavadi Road is possible through to the mint.

At the Baan Saengnoi community hall in Khueng Nai District of Ubon Ratchathani Province, the Livestock Development Department provincial office handed out 500 sets of hay, animal feed, and medicine to livestock owners in flood-stricken areas.

The Mun River at the Saphan Sereeprachathipatai gauging station has gone down by 9 centimeters, but remains over two meters deep.

Villager severely wounded in Narathiwat bombing

image_201111101252078C0882A1-F20D-AD63-8541DDD9F7F84E3B.jpg

NARATHIWAT, Nov 10 – A rubber tapper was badly hurt Thursday by a bomb explosion while he worked in a rubber plantation in Narathiwat’s Cho Ai Rong district, according to local authorities.

Taweesak Sangsuwan, 37, suffered serious shrapnel injuries to his face, right ankle and his left middle finger was almost severed.

He was sent to Naradhiwasrajanagarindra Hospital for medical treatment.

Mr Taweesak and his wife arrived at their rubber plantation for tapping early this morning, and while tapping latex he stepped on a booby trap mine hidden near a rubber tree.

The explosion wounded him, but his wife was unharmed.

During the inspection of the scene, the authorities found another explosive device buried beneath a tree three metres from the scene, and detonated the bomb.

The authorities said incident was intended to disrupt today’s Loy Krathong festival.

In a related development, before flying south to visit army personnel in the three southern border provinces, Army Chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha on Thursday reaffirmed that the actions taken to resolve the regional violence have been in line with the strategies of the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) and Thailand’s legal framework.

The strategies focus on proactive, defensive and development-related approaches.

Since 2004, the insurgency has escalated on a nearly daily basis in Thailand's restive southern border provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani. So far, the violence has claimed almost 4,800 lives of residents and authorities. (MCOT online news)

Fearing of Flood-related Pandemic Covers Charansanitwong Area

The floodwater in Charansanitwong area is beginning to recede.

However, locals are complaining that the water has begun to emit an unpleasant odor.

They fear it is a sign of a coming outbreak of flood-related diseases.

The floodwater at Bangkok's Charansanitwong Road continue to recede and many communities along the Chao Phraya River such as Wat Karuehabordi Temple community in Soi Charansanitwong 44 have recovered.

There are three mains water sluice gates, which are the Bowornmongkol, Karuehabordi, and Bangyeekan gates draining floodwater into the river.

As of now, the deluge is measured at 20 to 30 centimeters.

In addition, those living along the river do not have trouble against the stagnant water as their counterparts in other communities because of the river current.

In other parts of Charansanitwong area such as Sapan Mai and Bowornmongkol communities, as well as Wat Bovornmongkol and Tew Pai Ngam schools, the water level has stabilized for the last three days and is beginning to recede.

However, many inundated areas are now having trouble with the stagnant water emitting a foul odor and increasing amounts of garbage and there is increasing fear of an outbreak of flood-related ailments.

Local people reprimanded the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration or BMA for ignoring their situation by not dealing with uncollected garbage in the area and leaving it under floodwater for more than ten consecutive days.

They urged the BMA to take immediate action.
