Amateur Astronomy In Phuket

Featured Replies

Perseids are coming. There have already been photos around the world of some odd meteorites and fireballs.

Peak is August 11th to 13th.

Hope we can get a clear night. Not sure how long this rain is here for.

Seems to be mission impossible.

Last night was a moment with partial opening on the sky. Got this photo from Ao Por pier. No meteorites though.

hi all

i am also interested in astronomy. I used to have a Tasco telsocope when i was a kid.

For complete beginners who are interested, i recommend downloading google sky map for your smartphone

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.stardroid&hl=en

It uses the phone's gravity sensor to locate you on the planet, so that when you point your phone at the sky, it shows you on the sky map what you are looking at.

its really great to see a star or planet then use Sky Map to find out what it is you are looking at.

I always wanted to look at the Andromeda Galaxy but had to idea where in the sky to look, using the Sky Map search function i searched for Messier object 31 (andromeda) to find it.

quite often i go up to promthep cape at night to play around with it.

is there anyone in the naiharn area who has a decent telescope?

Last night around 6.40pm I looked up at a very clear sky (by Phuket standards) which was just going through the transformation of blue into darkness. There was a large, beautiful bright star or planet just down & slightly angled to the right away from the quarter moon. I wonder what it was.

jupiter is also very bright at the moment late at night, even with the zoom of my smartphone camera its disc can be seen

I read that comet Ison is about to go around the sun at the moment and it might, might still become visible comet. If that would happen, when?

according to this it will be best viewed in early december,

the second link tells you its exact current coordinates, will plug these coordinates into google sky map on my smartphone later to see if its visible at all

also venus is very bright and huge at the moment.... may go out and look for some cheap binoculars tommorow.

I guess Phuket does not have a public telescope or even one belonging to an astronomy group although I vaguely recall mention of one some years ago.

Hello everybody,

I’m Astronomy amateur from Russia quit often visiting your wonderful country during my vacation, especially PhuketJ

Every time I was in Phuket I watched at the night sky and missed about my scopes… (Different constellations could be observed from your location compare with Russia due to the different latitude).

I have few telescopes in Russia located at me village Observatory and every clean sky weekend I’m spending there observing the sky and making astrophotography.

Basically my dream is to live in Thailand but it brings a lot of issues related to job and housing…

As an alternative variant I thought about scope installation in less light polluted area of Phuket and visiting it twice a year during vacation. It raises questions again – where? Is it safe? Who will take care on equipment during my absence? Etc…

Looking forward for your ideas and proposalsJ

P.S. You could find me at Facebook (Andrey Voronkov)

With best regards,

Andrey
