PAD Leader Slams Govt's Push for Amnesty Decree

The founder of the yellow-shirt People's Alliance for Democracy condemned the Pheu Thai-led government for stealthily attempting to pass a royal amnesty decree to favor the convicted former prime minister, calling the act an effort to pressure the royal institution.

In an interview given to the ASTV Manager news website, Sondhi Limthongkul, founder of the People's Alliance for Democracy, or PAD, condemned the Pheu Thai-led government for attempting to amend certain provisions and pass a royal pardon decree behind closed doors to help convicted former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

He described the government's act as despicable and shameful.

Sondhi said if the government really had good intentions in issuing the amnesty decree for the celebration of His Majesty the King's 84th birthday on December 5, it should be carried out without ulterior motives.

However, that what the government did recently was seen as an effort to pressure the royal institution and break the rule of the law.

The yellow-shirt leader said this is not the kind of politics that will promote national unity, but rather the kind that is intended to serve the interests of a single individual.

Sondhi insisted the PAD will not tolerate the government's act, which he regarded as a show of defiance against the public.

He said core members are carefully examining the details of the royal pardon decree and will hold a meeting to determine the group's position on the issue as soon as possible.

Both the first and second generation of PAD leaders are expected to meet next week, according to the group's spokesperson, Panthep Phuaphongphan.

That's worrying to say the least.

Not to be confused with "stealthily" forming a coup in the middle of the night while Taksin was out of the country.

i think a huge worry for thailand right now is if it comes to the yellow shirts holding mass protests, i think they will be met head on and in equal number (at least) by the red shirts.

i shudder to think about it, and i don't think it's that far fetched either :(

Brace yourself. Flood followed by civil unrest/war. Not a nice scenario. And only for the benefit of one person.

Shameful is a very euphemistic word for the behavior of this government. But what can you do against people who don't care about losing face as long as their pockets get filled. Very sad.

I don't particularly like Sondhi but in this case, he's right. The flood waters haven't subsided yet and this toilet of a PT government is already back to business trying to get their master back. It looks as if they just are itching for the other side to start a protest or even have the Army stage a coup. If that happens, they only have themselves to blame.

Not at all. The red shirts are all for the democratic right to protest. :whistling:

Indeed.

Or what can you do against one so obsessed with regaining lost face he will bring the nation to it's knees, so he can win if that's what it takes to regain face.

An equally good question is:

What can men of reasonable moral attitudes and actions, do against those with no moral compunctions in their actions? To successfully win such a fight, means to lower your morality to the practical level of your opponents, or simply lose because they WILL do what you will not. If that is done, can your morality be salvaged again or is it lost forever? Churchill, U.S Grant, and Godfrey de Bouillon, would have understood this question well.

My I make a humble request to Khun Sondhi that if he is going to occupy the airport again, can he do so around the 20th Dec and not before, I am going on holiday, thanks very much for your kind consideration...:D

Which of course means the army and police will fracture and take sides against themselves internally until the lines are clearly drawn and try to destroy their counterparts once they understand whom has realigned with whom.

This assumes that all players will simply protest till it blows up, and 'more targeted actions' aren't taken to remove the focal points involved. Not all players on all sides are moral players in a chaotic world. All it takes is one sociopathicly driven group, to take an action for their own reasons, that most find anathema as morally reasonable people, and then it all breaks loose.

But in utterly unpredictable ways. Lacking a focal point, but consumed by rage and vengefulness, what do zealots do? Lash out at the last enemy they have been directed at.

I don't think PAD is the real worry.

As long as it's not "provocative" (as defined by them)

And remember, no clocks! To a redshirt if a clock is involved, it must be a bomb.

The blaming and shaming game continues. It is useless to hope that Thai politics and politicians ever change. When are they satisfied? When this country is going down in civil war?

the red ones never had numbers close to what yellow had and I doubt many reds want to get into fighting for 500 Baht.

More risk the yellow are holding mass protests and the government is shooting them again.

I would be better to occupy it NOW, because Don Muang is flooded already so they need to block just 1 instead of 2 airports. That makes things easier.

PAD started with blocking both airports last years.

But after realising that the toilet and roofted parking facility of the new airport is far superior, no hi-so want to gather at old airport, hence the reason why the old airport blockage was lifted.

We need someone to lead the protests. Would be so inconvenient if he was in jail.

Lest we forget and cast dispersions on the red shirts. According to their fearless leader MP Khun Jutaporn who vowed to fight to the death and who was the first one to run and leave the sheep to die when he knew the army was on the way, "we are a peaceful group".

And you should add that he never had the courage to face the electors.

Rupert Murdoch, Sondhi Limthongkul, why are all these press barons so evils ?
