when we got married in thailand my wife says the form asked if she wanted to be known by my surname .

she changed her id card and house book to my surname.

since she has moved to england her surname is known by every one sa her maiden name, national insurance , banks, doctors ,health service ,even her british passport after citizenship and thai passport is still in her maiden name.

now it is time to re new her thai passport and as the thai id and house book is now in her married name she will have to change her thai passport name to her married name

she now wants to change back to her maiden name but is convinced she is not allowed to do this .

can she go back to the registry building in her town and change her name back for a fee ???

thanks

Couldn't she have a double-barrelled name, something like Sinawatra-Smith.

Would this be less complicated or more complicated? You would need to do the same.

Adding a bit, rather than a complete change would appear to be easier on the surface.

This is probably destined to be the most idiotic reply you will get to your question, but it's still worth investigating IMHO.

If she is in the Uk then why not change it by Deed Poll..

She can do it online for less than £10.

Can call herself what she wants. No problem

Thais change their names all the time so I don't think it will be an issue, I don't know whether she can do it outside Thailand mind.

My lady changed her name from her married name back to her maiden name when she got divorced and never changed it again when we married. Id card still said 'Mrs'.

EDIT She actually changed her name some time after she divorced not as part of the divorce process.

thanks all for your replies

we are going to thailand in febuary so we will try to change her name back to maiden name at the local office in her town .

it will be so much easier for us if she kept her name. both in england and thailand.

she seems to think that she cannot keep her surname unless she divorces, but im sure she can change her name in thailand to what she wants .

i think that pre 1995 or 2005 (im not sure which is correct ) the law was different., and i think she gets confused by this.

the Thai law was indeed changed only a few years back. Now women are not forced to take the surname of their husbands when married, and can easily change their name to whatever they like these days.
