Attack on Coptic march in Cairo leaves dozens injured

2011-11-18 08:25:44 GMT+7 (ICT)

CAIRO (BNO NEWS) -- Dozens of Egyptian Christians were injured on Thursday when a march they were holding in Cairo was attacked, local media reported.

The march was held to commemorate the 40 day anniversary of the Maspero clashes with army personnel on October 9. The protesters were heading to Cairo's Maspero district to pray for the martyrs when unknown assailants attacked them with stones and Molotov cocktails, forcing security forces to use tear gas to disperse the protesters.

The Egyptian Ministry of Health confirmed that at least 29 people were injured during the attack. According to the ministry, the injuries varied from bruises and wounds on the body. Several cases of fainting have also been reported, according to the Al-Ahram daily newspaper.

Police cordoned off the area, but made no arrests. It is still unclear who attacked the protesters.

Egypt's military rulers denied allegations that its soldiers fired on protesters during the October 9 clashes which left at least 26 people dead and more than 300 others injured. The clashes happened when an estimated 10,000 Copts were marching in Cairo against religious persecution.

The protest, which was organized by the Maspero Youth Union, was against an attack on a Coptic church on September 30 in the southern Egyptian province of Aswan.

Sectarian clashes between Muslims and Christian Copts have increased in the past year. There are around 8 million Christian Copts in Egypt, which represent about 10 percent of the population, and the October 9 clashes were the worst since the revolution earlier this year.

Ah, that wonderful arab spring, Tunisia and Egypt completely f'd up though the liberal press keep spouting the same discredited democracy narrative.

It is surprising when Reuters reports on the violent Islamic attacks on non-Muslims but look how they frame and shape the narrative. "Clashes" is the headline on Muslims stoning mourning Christians. Imagine (and it would be hard because it never happens) if Christians stoned Muslims. Every non-Muslim would be tarred and feathered. New laws would be passed. Free speech would be restricted.......unimaginable consequences.

But non-Muslim victims of jihad? Nothing to see here, folks. Keep moving.
