December 5, 201114 yr The pharmacist in Boots this evening informed me that from 18/12/11 the sale of OTC pseudoephedrine will be prohibited in Thailand. Although this is long overdue to reduce ya ba production it is a very useful medicine to clear the sinuses during and after a cold. Although your friendly neighbourhood pharmacy is unlikely to enforce the ban immediately, I'm going to get a few packs for the medicine cupboard.
December 5, 201114 yr as far as know it has always been this way the only way to get it otc is in a mix with another drug man oh man you want a good nights sleep and clear sinuses oh and they are super cheap the thai ones so what exactly have you been buying at boots could you kindly list the active ingredients and dosages here thanks for the heads up
December 6, 201114 yr Author The ones I always get are pseudoephedrine 60mg , triprolidine HCl 2.5mg (an antihistamine).
December 6, 201114 yr They replaced the pseudoephedrine with phenylephrine in Australia (but you can still get it at some pharmacies as long as you show ID and they record it) and I notice that in pharmacies here in Thailand they sometimes only stock the latter though a lot of the smaller shops stock both. I noticed when in Australia that the cold and flu meds with phenylephrine did next to nothing for sinus pain and talked to the pharmacist who agreed that it didn't really do much and that I should get the product with pseudoephedrine as it was the only one that was effective. I hope they don't completely ban it here or that at least it can be bought from a doctor's clinic because it is the only thing that works for me when I get a flu with sinus problems.
December 6, 201114 yr The ones I always get are pseudoephedrine 60mg , triprolidine HCl 2.5mg (an antihistamine). thanks makes perfect sense 60mg now isn't that quite a high dose? try some thai pharmacies or clinics they have their own version super cheap!!! might stay available in the mix not sure alone you get at the hospitals as they are 'speedy' i believe i wouldn't mind finding triprolidine alone, as it is great for sleep, maybe hospital
December 7, 201114 yr AFAIK there are no brands of tripolidine alone available in Thailand, only combinations containing pseudoephedrine. 60 of pseudoephedrine + 2.5 tripolidine not at all unusual, in fact it's what Actifed contains. The tripol helps offset the stimulant effects of the pseudoE. it is indeed going to be a major nbuisance to have all of these OTC cold remedies become prescription only but that's life....

December 11, 201114 yr Would just like to add that Pseudoephedrine should only be given to adults! Our daughter was given pseudoephidrine when she had an ear infection. I did some research and found several kids has died from it! I confronted the doctor who just shrugged and said something about annoying farangs. Well I'd much rather be an annoying farang than a mother who's child died because of an ignorant doctor!
