Pakistani President Zardari travels to Dubai for hospital visit

2011-12-07 07:17:08 GMT+7 (ICT)

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari was admitted to a hospital in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on late Tuesday evening due to his cardiovascular health condition, officials said.

Zardari, 56, who arrived in Dubai on Tuesday, traveled to the country to undergo a number of medical exams. According to Colonel Salman, the president's personal physician who also traveled to Dubai, the purpose of Zardari's trip is to carry out routine medical tests related to his previously diagnosed cardiovascular condition.

Zardari's presidential spokesperson Farhatullah Babar had previously confirmed that the president had traveled to the UAE along with a team of doctors - in addition to Colonel Salman - and members of the Assembly. He also said he will be visiting his children. The sudden trip to the UAE, however, has had media outlets pondering about the president's health condition.

Prior to his departure, Zardari met with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, Chairman Senate Farooq H Naik and Interior Minister Rehman Malik for an overall review, as well as security arrangements for Ashura and legislative business in Senate.

Zardari has served as Pakistan's president since September 2008.
