LOS ANGELES (BNO NEWS) -- Emmy Award-winning actor Harry Morgan, star of the 1970s TV hit series M*ASH, died in California on Wednesday, his family said. He was 96.

Morgan, who was born in Detroit, Michigan, died at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday after recently being treated for pneumonia, his son Charles told the New York Times.

Morgan was probably best known for his role in MASH as Colonel Sherman T. Potter, who he portrayed from 1975 until 1983 and which earned him an Emmy Award in 1980 for best supporting actor in a comedy series. Prior to MASH, he starred in the TV series Dragnet for three years, portraying Detective Bill Gannon of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Morgan initially began his acting career on the big screen, appearing in 'To the Shores of Tripoli' in 1942 and later appearing in 'Orchestra Wives' that same year. He would eventually appear in over 100 films during his professional career.

With his first wife Eileen, Morgan had four children. The marriage lasted 45 years until her death in 1985. Only four years later, one of his four children died in 1989. Morgan is survived by his second wife Barbara, his three sons, as well as eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Weird, I've been downloading/watching MASH over the last few days. I'm in the habit of looking up the cast while watching old programs and looked up Harry Morgan just yesterday, surprised to find he was (then) still alive.

Sorry 'bout that...
