Blocked Web Content In Thailand

Im using True ultra high speed Fibre 10mpbs @ 699 per month.

I was worried that the 10mb speed would be inside Thailand only but that was not the case, Speedtests 10mbps every time to USA, Singapore, UK etc,

It may be useful to know that any sites with Adult material are blocked. More sites than I have seen blocked by other ISP. I was wondering how much is the ministry of communication and how much is True trying to save on International Bandwidth !?

I would hazard a bet that if you trace the "Page blocked" messages back not all are from the Ministry

45 years old and being dictated to what websites I can look at.

I see huge variance in what is blocked by different ISPs, I use True (office), KSC (home but dead right now due to flooding) and AIS 3G (what I'm using now).

And like PP I see non-adult sites blocked by one ISP and not another, it really is totally inconsistent.

Oh Dear, its not looking good long term for this True high speed internet, Lucky I still have my 3BB TT&T connection also.

Just tried to torrent.

with True 10mbps it only gives 150kbps but when i swap to the 3BB it goes up to 950kbps

True must be Limiting Torrents! but 150kbps is very low

Anyone else DL torrents with True highs speed? can you comment on the max speed?

Try and test to see if they are shaping http://broadband.mpi...ttest-mlab.php?

3BB was shaping my http content between 12:00-24:00, I called and complained telling them about the results of the test and now they no longer cut my speeds in half during those hours.

TRUE, always have your maximum speed, and ping, when testing from speedtest.net, or similar sites.

go to http://pingtest.net/, and see if the quality, is good to the same location, as your speedtest.

you will never get your full bandwith internationally.

i switched from True, to TOT, and speedtest are showing a much more varied result, other than constant "max speed".

You should NOT even be thinking about looking at online pornography from within Thailand. The ISPs block it for a reason: because most of it is highly illegal under Thai morality laws. If your ISP reported your IP address, you could be facing a lengthy jail term. I know of one Thai man living near me who went to jail for having porn on his computer, and we're not talking about pedophilia here. Most if not all of the hardcore porn made in the USA, for example, would be illegal in Thailand, which is why the Government blocks it. Although I have sometimes looked at porn myself in other countries including Europe and the USA, i would NEVER consider doing so in Thailand precisely because of the illegality and the fact that I'm not keen on spending any time inside a Thai jail.

I'm on true and usually get good speeds with torrents. Downloaded a 3 gig file earlier, utorrent says my average speed was 583kB/s

It may have something to do with the governments crackdown on websites.

I read somewhere about the number of sites that have been closed over the past month or so. If I remember correctly it's more than double the amount closed over the past year. I have been searching this forum for the figures but I can't find them so it must have been in the Bangkok Post that I read it.

Edit: Just seen a figure of 60,000 sites blocked in the last three months compared with 73,000 over the last three years.

Most providers here use some sort of "proxies", so the speedtest results are fake.

Test an international server (US or Europe) using www.speedtest.net

then (immediately afterwards) try www.pingtest.net

Note the different ping times. I have also tested the d/l speeds using more detailed technology and have noticed a 30% difference for d/l and u/l speeds on average.

Basically put the speedtest results ARE being manipulated by the ISPs here.

Yeah, but follow the money.

Who makes money when you patronize a local prostitute? Who is it that enforces the prostitution laws?

Who makes money when you download foreign porn? Who is it that enforces the internet (and pornography) laws?

Which activity do you figure is more likely to get you in legal trouble, and which do you think is more likely to be protected?

It's not clear who is blocking what.

I cannot directly the US Social Security Administration any longer, unless I use my VPN. Is it the US site that is rejecting traffic from Thailand, or is there a routing issue, or is it MICT? I doubt it's the latter, but I have seen many sites that ARE blocked by MICT, for which I can't discern a reason. Oh well, TI (indeed) T.

I remember the times I was working for a major ISP in Thailand. We were receiving a monthly-or-so list of IP addresses that we were supposed to block access from our customers.

This list was received by fax from a government agency! so one of the guys in my team had to re-type it by hand and enter every IP into the configuration of our proxies.

You can imagine that many, many mistakes were made...

I would assume that things have changed since then (some 10 years ago) but maybe not after all :)

That would explain the discrepancies between the ISP's blacklists.
