The Sankhamphaeng race is on the road, but mtb's are required. In past years even suspension forks were required and minimum 1.9" tires. There were about 25 categories last year and I'm sure there will be a similar amount this year.

Doi Inthanon had 4 categories last year:

men on road bikes

men on mtb's

women on road bikes (only one official entrant last year, I was told)

women on mtb's

Doi Suthep was also "mtb on road" last year with the same equipment requirements as the SKP race above. I haven't heard that there will be any changes this year.

There's also a race north of Chiang Rai on 22 Jan, and another on 8 Jan but it was a little to far from CM for me to focus on the details.

Heard some sketchy information that there is a mountain bike race tomorrow in Mae Taeng. A yearly farm and floral festival starts tomorrow on the road between HWY 107 and Mae Ngat Dam and bike races are included this year. Will send more details when I learn more. It is in the park across from the new market building about 2 km past the hospital. If you live up in that area, might be worth checking out tomorrow. This means you Tonto!

‘Rodger that…T_dog, I’m on it like a car bonnet!

If and that’s a big if I can bend my left leg past top centre when peddling, I had a bit of a get-off two day ago, (slow mo…’action reply speed) over the

bars. It’s getting better bit by bit, if I can ride, I’ll enter even if I just poodle around the course.

If I find out anymore, I’ll post tonight.

OK…..I went and had a look, sorry no Bike race tomorrow, 25/12…….just a fun run…..On foot.

However, there is a bike race, starting at that location on the 31/12. Registration opens 0700 hours, race starts at 0900 hours. MTB only!

Sorry no more info available, all very helpful there but still it took 20 minutes just to get the date and times. I’ll post more info if I get any.

thanks will try to make the San Kampaeng one, if you find out more details please share

All info will eventually be on Thai MTB as it's a huge event. There's no entry fee, but decent prizes so about 1,000 riders will probably participate.

There are A categories with Juniors, Open and Masters with 10 year age groups, B categories with 5 year age groups, C categories (I have no idea what that is), Women, Junior women, Masters women (35+), Clydesdales, and a few more categories.

The races start in front of the Municipal Hall. The A's do a course of about 47kms. The B's do about 40 kms. The race ends at the top of the climb just past the Sankhamphaeng Hot Springs.

New this year will be a single, Open road bike category with a course of about 100 kms.

Ok. Stand fast on the date……….Just been told by ‘T_dog’ who is at there now, he says he has been told it’s on the 1st Jan, (which actually make more sense, this being Thailand) He is going to double check……..So don’t start waxing your legs just yet!

Well, after serious interogation, it turns out that the race is on 31 DecemberThe brochure is incorrect. Registration is at 9 AM and they are expecting a good turn out.

Friends of mine are doing the race. It's definitely on 31 Dec. All details are on Thai MTB. I would send the link but I'm out of town for New Years so I didn't bother searching for the details. Sorry. But what I do know is that it's either 30 or 32 kms. It starts in Mae Tang, goes up the hill past the hospital, and finishes at the Mae Ngat Dam. MTB's are required but the entire race is on the road. We rode the back roads from CM to and from the dam today and all the arrows were out on the course already.

Your Thai must have gotten a lot better, as the English Forum there is still inop for me. If you happen across the link, post it here. They told me that registration and start for the Mae Taeng race is at the Muangkaen Festival area, not downtown Mae Taeng. But.... these were festival organizers, not bikers.

Don't you have a long haired dictionary?

I should stop posting when I don't have all the details.

You are correct. The race starts on the road AFTER the hospital so you do not have to do that climb.

And if that's where they're starting, they probably are not finishing at the dam, but maybe turning around there?

I usually use 'google translate' on the Thai pages of Thai MTB. The translation never makes sense but you can usually figure out the details you need to know.

Got that, and the dictionary says "Hi"! Some websites make Google Translate go nuts and thaimtb is one of them. Not sure what the problem is but I must be doing something wrong. Thanks for the info. I'm going to put my people in it now.

For anyone who is still interested in the ‘ride-out’ on this Sat 31 Dec at Mae Taeng. I have an update for you; I rode the route today, it’s about 30km, flat, very flat, (two inclines, one about 800m and the other about 300m long) No off-road, 85% tarmac….15% hard pack dirt track……………Don’t want to get them dirt bikes dirty…….do we!

Starts at the Mae Taeng stadium heads out to the dam, via some dirt track detour, over the dam….and back to the stadium.

One thing to note guys, the course layout, (IMHO) not only makes it easy for course cutting…. (Of course this will not ever happen…… as we are in Thailand) If I didn’t know better I’d say the course has been laid out to assist all the limp wristed riders……..So if you get pissed at cheaters……..Stay away or come with a ride-out, not race attitude.

I’ve been told by ‘junglechief’ that registration can be done tomorrow PM. I’ll post tomorrow with some more info………………laters Tonto

Tonto,

You have a serious problem. Been drinking again?

I've done many road races and 'MTB on road' races in Thailand. No one who has ever made the podium has ever "cut the course" in a race I have done. possible someone in the back of the pack has, but then who cares? Maybe you're acquaintances are prone to cheating, maybe it's just an MTB thing, or maybe it's common in your home country.

As for your "limp wrist" comment, is that an MTB term? I'm a roadie and never heard that as a cycling related comment.

You really should crawl back in your hole.

Maybe it's another of your acquaintances that Junglechief guy who cheats (not to be confused with me, Junglechef, who is happy to just finish). But I did find it interesting that on the thaimtb.com website for this event they say they are going to follow the rules of some international body, an acronym I wasn't familiar with, as I've never seen so much official sounding stuff here. My experience is that Mt. Biking incl. races bring out the best in all people, I've only felt comradeship where ever I ride. I also tried the English forum there but only got as far as "This forum is for foreign cyclist , Thai or Falang in Thailand". On another note the only time I've suffered from limp wrists is from my second favorite sport! Hope you all can come out for the New Years Eve Day race/ride, it should be fun as always!!

Hi ‘el jefe’ ‘Meoooow’……….I have a problem? You ask if I’ve been drinking, is this how you think you’ll get me to take your comments seriously.

So nobody has ever cut a course in Thailand? Really……You know this do you? Where in my post did I mention podium riders? But don’t let that stop you commenting on things I didn’t say, and what makes your opinion more valid than mine a?

Who do you think your kidding……Course cutting will happen everywhere, where the courses are poorly laid out and some riders will, if they feel they can get away with it……’Cheat’ if you don’t believe this, I’m not the one with a problem. You talk about course cutting being OK at the back of the field….Why? Why should this be acceptable? There are riders of all ability riding, for most it’s not about getting a podium potion, it’s a personal thing, gauging there achievement by time and finishing position………………Course cutting undermines this….But that’s OK is it, as long as it’s going on behind you?

Limp wrist riders or individuals are those who go for the best finish position…..Without putting any effort in, you can work that one out, I don’t need to explain that do I?

I’ve read mine and your post a few times, and still don’t understand why you have spat your dummy out over what I’ve said………………….Basically I said; the course is poorly laid out, in respect to course cutting and if that piss’s you off, come with a ride out mentality. I think Sigmund Freud would find your reaction to my post interesting!

Right, got to go…..I’ve got to go and clean out my hole! wink.png

The Mae Taeng race is history. A fun time, and the friendly nature of it reminded me of times when MTB racing was just getting started in the USA. About 200-300 racers turned out I estimate. Heard talk from some of the Thai riders that enjoyed drafting a certain tall rider from Denmark! 32 kilometer course length with a short section of dirt as Tonto pointed out, but tough enough for this old fart Clydesdale.

Yep! All done…….Good event, well run and a friendly bunch of guys and girls. ‘junglechef’ and I meet up just after the dirt track, and rode the remainder of the course near each other……….A little to close at one point, (banging bars)

Big up for ‘T_dog’ (should be sly dog) he turns up, with the Miss, not going to race, he had a few sherbets last night, 5 minutes to go……He signs up, same group as me, (old crusty) the flag go’s down…….’T_dog’ disappears in a cloud of dust, leaves me looking for my peddles….Nice one……Good ride out!

Another fun day on two wheels! Nicely organized, some familiar faces and nice to meet a few new ones and also lovely scenery. About the banging bars incident, I was only trying to knock you off your bike so I could finish in front of you, all in good sport of course. Wishing all a Happy New Years and Keep on Riding!

Was nice to meet you Junglechef and you are right about the race being well organized. It was well supported on the route and the scenery through the rice fields and the view from the top of the dam was itself worth the ride. Am wondering if you guys noticed the ladyboys rooting us on out there on the dirt section. Lots of smiling faces wherever spectators were.

Last time I rode with Tonto he was a hard guy to keep up with so this time I shoved a few pennies in his disk brakes. He'll wear them down eventually.

TV member kjdk took second place in his category and congrats to him.

Here is some information on another race that is sure to have a beautiful route. This is up in the Mae Sariang area on the way to Mae Hong Son. A ways out but thought I would post the brochure. The date is 15 January and the phone number for more information is 053-611-385.

Shame I could not ride. I won't be on the bike for some time after breaking my femur on the road. At least this gives a chance to some of the other over 60s who no doubt are delighted with my absence! Good luck to them, and I mean that!
