I received a system messages last night that a certain user, let's call him X, added me as his friend. I had never seen his nick before. I looked up his profile and nothing rang a bell.

So I sent him a PM and asked whether we know each other. He replied that he doesn't know me, but has noticed that I had added him as a friend this morning and he was wondering why...

Seems there is a software glitch. Can anybody confirm something similar?

Unless you actually set it to approve only then the board software default has always been to add friends (and comments) automatically, the only difference is now you are getting email notices about it.

To change the adding friends, click on my settings in the drop down menu next to your user name at the top right hand corner and the options are there on the first page, click on notification options to change notifications.

Thanks for your reply, but we were added to each other's list of friends without any action on our side.

I just saw your reply because I looked into this forum and at the thread I started. Obviously, all tickmarks that I had set to notify me when threats I follow (that includes those I started) have gone. I have reset them now.

It appears the new software still has some glitches.

Yes, you need ot change the friends settings as well if you don't want people to add you automatically.

I've always wondered about this "friends" thing. I've got 4 it seems, though I don't really have any idea who they are. It doesn't bother me, but what does it mean to be someone's "friend" here? Does it create more user options or something?

Honestly, I don't know, perhaps its less searching if there is someone specific you want to get in touch with? But you can set it to approve only, so that people can't automatically add you in your settings

I believe it's something from the Facebook culture: If you have 1,500 friends, you can consider yourself popular. Nowadays you can "meet on the internet" and be some sort of friends with someone without ever having met them in person.
