Motorbike Driver killed in North Pattaya road accident

PATTAYA: -- A 29 year old motorbike driver was killed following a road accident involving 4 vehicles on the Sukhumvit Road in North Pattaya late on Friday night. The dead motorbike driver was named as Khun Chayut who was slumped over his mangled motorbike when officers and rescue workers arrived. Witnesses at the scene confirmed the motorbike was driving at a high rate of speed and failed to see a large truck turning off the main road. The truck failed to use its indicating lights and the bike collided with the rear of the truck causing the driver to fall onto the road. A minivan travelling behind could not stop in time and ran over the bike driver. A further vehicle then slammed into the rear of the minivan. The offending truck decided not to remain at the scene of the accident,

Why do so many drivers flee the scene in thailand?

Poor bloke...

Why do so many drivers flee the scene in thailand?

2 reasons

1 - because they know they can get away with it, as no one will follow up ..

2 - if the family are near by, they might mob the driver

3. They are likely to be extorted for everything they own by the Thai police.

4. They are likely to be extorted for everything they own by the deceased's family.

The news article just wrings of Thai driving culture btw.

Bike rider riding too fast and not paying attention.

Truck not using indicators.

Accident.

Truck fleeing the scene.

Remember that accident in Lampang about 2 years ago where the truck fleeing the scene of an accident wiped out 10 motorbikes that were stopped at a red light.

Edit:

This is a link to that truck hit and run, over 10 dead. For some reason not one of the major newspapers mentioned it.

Be wary of Thai trucks. And cars. and bikes. And carts. And buffaloes.

Depending on where this happened the "offending truck driver" may not have needed to indicate when leaving the highway.

In any event the onus is on a driver to manage his speed and stop before hitting vehicles in front - something the bike, minivan and other vehicle clearly failed to do.

If somebody was sharp enough to notice a lack of indicator perhaps they could have been sharp enough to note the registration plate.
