Israeli airstrike kills suspected Palestinian militant in Gaza

2011-12-29 04:31:31 GMT+7 (ICT)

GAZA (BNO NEWS) -- One suspected Palestinian militant was killed on Tuesday when the Israeli Air Force carried out an airstrike in the northern Gaza Strip, officials said on Wednesday. Two others were injured.

The airstrike took place in the Dowar Abu Sharkh area of the Gaza Strip when an Israeli aircraft fired a missile at a motorcycle, killing one militant and injuring two others. The body of the militant was taken to a hospital in Beit Lahiya, north of Gaza.

Israeli officials said the airstrike was targeting "Gazan terrorists" who were involved in recent attacks on Israel, although no other details were immediately provided. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Hamas is responsible for any terrorist activity coming out of Gaza.

Hamas identified the fatality as Abdullah Telbani, an operative of Islamic Jihad's Saraya Al-Quds wing. The group said Abdullah Telbani was in his 20s.

"
The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers, and will operate against anyone who uses terror against the State of Israel," an IDF spokesperson said. "The Hamas terror organization is solely responsible for any terrorist activity emanating from the Gaza strip."
