Farage faces Clacton showdown as rivals refuse to stand

Nigel Farage's dramatic gamble to resign as MP and force a by-election has taken another extraordinary twist after Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, the Greens and Restore Britain all announced they will not contest the seat.

The Reform UK leader resigned his Clacton seat insisting voters—not Westminster—should judge the allegations surrounding his finances. If re-elected, Farage says he will return to Parliament with an even stronger mandate.

The decision by the major parties to stand aside means the campaign is shaping up exactly as Farage hoped: a straight fight between Reform and what he calls "the establishment".

Farage: 'Let the people decide'

Announcing his resignation, Farage dismissed the controversy surrounding undeclared financial support and accused the political establishment of trying to destroy Reform UK.

"This is a chance to stick two fingers up to the entire establishment," he declared.

Farage insists he has broken no parliamentary rules and says the financial support he received was personal rather than political.

Rivals refuse to play along

Labour branded the contest a political stunt designed to distract attention from the Standards Commissioner's investigation.

The Conservatives also declined to field a candidate, with Kemi Badenoch calling it a "fake election".

The Liberal Democrats argued the parliamentary investigation should finish before voters return to the polls, while the Green Party and Restore Britain also confirmed they would stay out.

The only confirmed challenger so far is perennial protest candidate Count Binface.

Investigation only paused

Although Farage has resigned, the parliamentary standards investigation has not disappeared.

The inquiry into allegations surrounding a £5 million gift from businessman Christopher Harborne has simply been suspended while Farage is no longer an MP.

If he wins the by-election, the investigation resumes immediately.

Should the Standards Commissioner eventually recommend a suspension long enough to trigger recall rules, Clacton could even face a second by-election.

High-stakes political gamble

Farage won Clacton comfortably at the 2024 General Election with a majority of more than 8,000 votes.

By forcing a by-election himself, he is betting that voters care more about what they see as establishment attacks than Westminster investigations.

If he wins convincingly, he will almost certainly claim a renewed personal mandate and argue the allegations have been rejected by the public.

If turnout is poor or his majority is slashed, however, critics will argue the gamble has backfired.

Discussion

This could become one of the most unusual by-elections in modern British politics. With the main parties refusing to stand, Farage has turned what began as a standards investigation into a public referendum on himself.

Whether that proves to be political genius or an enormous miscalculation will soon be decided—not in Westminster—but by the voters of Clacton.

Nigel, the Parliamentary Standards Committee investigation can wait while you make a rare visit to your constituency to splurge tax payers money on a totally unnecessary bi-election.

I'm not sure that the Count's proposed policy to increase the value of a try in Rugby League from 4 to 5 points will resonant with the good folk of Clacton

The Count has a few "off the wall" policies, but also some that are worth considering. 5, 9, 12, 17 and 20 would get my support.

He is the Unity candidate - the good folk of Clacton should get behind him. Particularly on bin day.

Crewkerne Gazette - a far right anti-Labour / anti- uni party fringe group who seem to support Restore have come out for Binface with a series of meme videos - here is their latest. Resore hate Frage so much they take the enemies enemy is my friend whereas the man behind Binface is a left wing writer and comedian. We live in strange times. It is the summer you never know Clacton’s anti-Farage alliance of people wanting to have a go at a corrupt establishment figure might just put Binface into Parliament.

Clearly you have never been to the Crown and Treaty pub in Uxbridge as number 18 is more important. The hand dryer positioning is a disgrace in the gents toilets. The toilet is simply not big enough to accommodate 2 urinals, one sink and one hand dryer, but the hand dryer should at the very least be moved to the right side of the sink.

The last time I was in there there was also (incredibly) a toilet attendant offering to put soap on and dry hands for a tip as well consuming space.

Don’t be surprised if Farage backs out of the by-election he has forced.

If he loses to Count Binface it would be an utter humiliation.

If he wins he’ll be back under the Parliamentary Standards investigation he’s run away from.

Look out for him making some speech along the lines of directing his energies into the more important task of Reform winning a general election.

It’s the only option that avoids a real risk of humiliation, or if humiliation is dodged, the restart of investigation.

If Khunchai Binface was running for the Thai Parliament (geddit!) then he could run on banning the "hand towel of doom" that sits on a peg in most Thai bar bathrooms teeming with nasties - causing one to wipe one's hands on one’s own clothing rather than transfer festering boogies onto one's own good self. Along with motorbike accidents it's the single most negative thing about the Land of Lies.

Seriously, lets hope the people of Clacton don't throw their vote away on a ridiculously silly novelty candidate, and instead overwhelmingly vote for Count Binface.

BTW on a serious point electoral law quite rightly doesn’t allow political parties to bankroll elections (looking at you Thailand!) to ensure they are free , fair and not subject to corruption. Farage's team knew that (or should have) so his hissy fit petulant strop is costing the taxpayer a quarter of million quid for what exactly ?

It's probably the worse political decision he's made he though he could get ahead of the scandal by pulling this stunt and the rest of the serious parties went nah - we'll wait until the Standard Committee has done it's work and then cometh the hour cometh the clever Count Binface and the silly season so it's Farage vs Binface. Even if Farage wins, it will be a Pyrrhic victory and when he comes back to Parliament , he returns as a diminished figure with everyone taking the piss. Not just in Westminster, but across the media and online. A serious own goal with no upside and considerable downside. I suspect if he's not already doing it then he will be looking for an off ramp and out so he can pile up the cash unencumbered by parliamentary regulations.

BTW he seriously stiffed the Reform candidate he pushed aside when taking the seat on the first time he stood and won - his millions and multiple houses don't extend to being fair. I think the technical term is a right "Gareth".

Mr Mack, who announced he was standing as an independent candidate on Saturday 8 June, added that he was "devastated", "disappointed" and "fearful for democracy in our country".

Over more than six months as a Reform UK candidate he said he had spent around £6,000 of his own money on campaigning, including printing costs, merchandise and events.

"I’ve seen nothing of that [returned], absolutely nothing," he added.
