You should go and chat with the guy who runs Studio Iglu here in Chiang Mai. I don't believe that I can post a link here to a commercial website but if you Google "studioiglu" you'll be fine! It's a professional local company ran by a Finnish guy with a few Thai guys working for him. They have done some quality work that I am sure he would be happy to show you. He made the new website for Lanna International School last year, so if you have a look at that site you'll get a good idea of what he is capable of.

My apologies if this is a bit of a blatant plug for one company, but I worked with him in developing the new school site and I have to say that he was a pleasure to work with - a pretty rare thing in the world of web design... and he came recommended to me from a previous client who was equally satisfied, after having several bad experiences before finding him!

PRO GRADE WEBSITE TEMPLATE

Just get perhaps a wordpress template (or shopping cart template) from templatemonster for circa $65 (They look $2000 and up quality).W3 Total Cache is a free wordpress plug-in for wordpress that will make your website load so fast for users that it feels like you have dedicated hosting. Avoid buying any Macromedia flash sites or flash animation elements.

Get a template that balaces a pro look with a sensible layout for reading. There are so many sites on the web that a visitor would never know it is a template you are using.

EDITING

Get someone to mod it (add text /change layout colour etc) for around $100-$200 from India on elance (look at their feedback just like on ebay before paying)

https://www.elance.com/ .Pay them for each milestone completed, never 100% in advance !

and make sure they know your keywords e.g "Chiang Mai elephants" etc for on-page SEO (where it will show up on google for your search phrase) before they start !! A wordpress template can rank number 1 in weeks/days if you have an easy niche.

For real bargain basement outsourcing actions you can rent fiverr users...make a logo, bookmark my site (bookmarking demon),write a 400 word article, post my article across blogs (Unique article wizard) with my URL etc

http://fiverr.com/

HOSTING + URL (www.---------------.com)

$3.95 per month (3 years best) $10 or so for URL (www.---------------.com) per year

http://hostingwebsit...s.com/bluehost/

Bluehost have auto wordpress set-up.

1-button set-up almost by 3rd party company.

Solid company/solid service for the PRICE.

There are freehosts but they can get hacked or your site just vanishes or is terribly slow for users.

Always know your target keywords before starting otherwise it is a kind of waste of time unless your vistor primarily sees the www.......com from flyers or shop-front window etc.Getting to #1 on google can be so easy for less popular longer phrases, especially (Chiang Mai + keywords or keywords + Chiang Mai). It is not the rocket science some would lead you to believe for more peripheral search phrases.

There is enough above to get a $3000 grade of quality site live for $300 (less if you can do stuff yourself)above.

Thanks Freedomnow ! I'm a content writer finally getting around to setting up my own wbe pg/ virtual business card and have quite a long growth curve with tricking out my (free) template to what I envision.... but that's what I get for going it alone - polite for 'strapped for cash.' I've got my url and am using Wordpress. After a week's worth of work I can see some progress.... probably something a real designer would throw together in under 30 mins. But I think it's good to know the mechanics anyway. Eventually I won't look like such a design luddite.

Besides, being a writer, I know I've got good content, and can still freelance jobs anyway. Just looking fwd to having a site up.

Anyway, thanks for recommending those sites ! I like the loader link especially. And I'm open to any further expert advice. Currently I'm thinking I'm gonna need to install a more functional pic gallery to showcase my articles along with the pictures that have accompanied them. I don't want just a dry text site, but not a full-on photo site. And it shouldn't look like a blog. It should look like a set page. Any widget or gallery installer I should know about ? Prob depends on which template I've used.... but I'm thinking that as long as I'm within my allowed mb usage I can do it. Yes ?

realthaideal :-

Wordpress photo galleries/article sites.

http://www.templatem...&style=&author=

1-stop instantly free website for the novice

https://posterous.com/

Combined with their photo gallery free skin, it looks in no way like a blog and can take text below like an article site. You can buy or transfer your www--------.com with them........OR free sub-domain....

www.mysitename.posterous.com

Very intuitive to use.....expect small ads from posterous on your free page sometime in the future.I'd say posterous is ideal for realthaideal.
