Swede NATO officer dies in Phuket crash

Phuket Gazette –

PHUKET: A 48-year-old Swedish man who reportedly worked for NATO died in a motorbike accident on Phuket’s west coast early this morning.

Pol Capt Somnerk Dumkewa of Kamala Police told the Phuket Gazette that his officers received a call reporting the accident at about 2:30am.

At the scene, on the street leading to the Kamala Tambon Administration Organization (OrBorTor), officers found the man already dead lying near a red Honda motorbike.

His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Capt Somneuk said the man had suffered a severe head injury. “He was dead when we arrived,” he said.

Police at the scene found blood on a broken window of a house close to the edge of the road, Capt Somneuk said.

“We believe the man was traveling at speed when he failed to make the curve. He hit a house that is right beside the road. We found blood on the side of the house and on glass from a broken window [on the front of the house],” he said.

The man’s body was taken to Patong Hospital.

“The Swedish embassy was notified of the death this morning,” Capt Somnerk said.

A fellow officer at Kamala Police Station told the Gazette that police had been informed the man worked for NATO, but added that it was not confirmed what role the man fulfilled with the international peace-keeping organization.

The man’s death came less than three hours after the nationwide Seven Days of Danger road-safety campaign that concluded at midnight last night.

As such, the death is not included in the final tally of six deaths on Phuket's roads for the new year holiday period.

Sweden is not part of NATO.

You might want to lookup Partnership for Peace and Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC) as Sweden is a NATO partner.

An important area of cooperation is the country’s support for NATO-led operations. Sweden is currently contributing to the peacekeeping operations in Kosovo and Afghanistan, as well as assisting in enforcing the no-fly zone over Libya as part of Operation Unified Protector. In the past, it supported the NATO-led operation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Sweden is not one of the 28 nations which form the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).

The article mentions that the deceased man was working for the "International Peace Organisation" this leads me to suspect that an error has been made and that the chap was actually working for the United Nations (UN)

Sweden is part of the "Partnership of Peace".

A double framework has been established to help further co-operation between the 28 NATO members and 22 "partner countries".

  • The Partnership for Peace (PfP) program was established in 1994 and is based on individual bilateral relations between each partner country and NATO: each country may choose the extent of its participation. The PfP program is considered the operational wing of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership.[82] Members include all current and former members of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Belarus joined NATO's Partnership for Peace in 1995.[83]

"Capt Somneuk said the man had suffered a severe head injury."

And where was his required helmet that the BiB stop all farangs for not wearing?

Are you sure it was not another robbery like was reported not that long ago?

The farang bodies are piling up in phuket

Very significant and important note:

" The man’s death came less than three hours after the nationwide Seven Days of Danger road-safety campaign that concluded at midnight last night.

As such, the death is not included in the final tally of six deaths on Phuket's roads for the new year holiday period."

Soon time for a mandatory alco-lock on motorbikes ( and cars)
