BANGKOK: -- Nearly 200,000 persons have been affected by the recent round of flood and flood-related problems in the South, according to the authorities.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation estimates that over Bt80 million in flood-related losses caused by the recent round of rainstorms leading to the inundation of parts of nine southern

provinces and warned five coastal provinces of possible further heavy rain in the coming days.

Flash floods caused by heavy rains Nov 22-28 damaged 55 districts, 213 sub-districts and 1,183 villages in nine Southern provinces--Surat Thani, Songkhla, Narathiwat, Patthalung, Yala, Trang, Nakhon Si

Thammarat, Chumphon, and Satun, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department director-general Anucha Mokavej told the press on Wednesday.

More than 193,000 people from over 91,000 families have been affected by floods that caused seven deaths--four in Nakhon Si Thammarat, on reach of the other three in Narathiwat, Songkhla, and Pattalung, Mr. Anucha said.

A total of 304 homes, 1,123 roads, 55 bridges, at least 196,000 rai of farmlands, and 60 fish-farms were destroyed or badly damaged. Overall damages totaled over Bt 80.3 million, he said.

Citing the weather forecast, Mr. Anucha warned coastal residents in the vicinity of Chumporn to be alert for possible natural danger due to further heavy rains predicted in the next few days, especially on

Dec 4, when very strong winds are expected on the Gulf of Thailand. Seafarers are urged to be more cautious, and small boats are advised not to put out to sea.

Referring to state aid measures, the disaster response director said that a temporary flood prevention centre staffed with emergency workers has been set up in each province to keep a 24-hour watch on

the flood situation, including rapid-response teams ready for aid operations in flood-affected areas.

Chumphon and Suratthani seem to have been updating about every hour recently, Songkhla has stopped reporting and Saturn Field does not update regularly.
