just bargain for the extras... most likely you can get tinted windows, thick undermats for floor, and maybe another odd thing or two (little plastic wings over the top of the windows?)... and maybe they will accompany you to nearby temple for blessing... we bought our (vios) from toyota dealer on the road from airport plaza towards the moat.. we priced at all toyota dealers in town and prices were the same, with no one budging on the price... but number of extras varied slightly.

Go to both Niyom Phanich and also the Toyota dealer near the interesection of he Hang Dong Road and the Middle Ring, and try to play them against each other. There's also Saha Phanich on the Mae Rim road, but they're related to Niyom. Doesn't hurt to try though in case you get a sales person who still needs to make his quota.

You will likely have some additional leverage because their main competitors have a brand new truck model out, so inevitably there will be a lessened demand for Toyotas.

In reference to the above, are YOU sure you want a 6 year old design, and not the new Chevy or Isuzu or Ford? They are very impressive vehicles.

(Closely related technically to the Isuzu, but in an apparent effort to establish Chevrolet as a leading brand the Chevy truck has an upgraded engine, whereas the Isuzu sibling still makes do with the same engine the old D-Max had. Chances are teh Isuzu will get the engine upgrade at the first minor-change, usually around the time the competing Toyota model is released which is often a year later.)

(Isuzu traditionally has a rock-solid trade-in value, together with Toyota. That it didn't get the engine upgrade still makes it slightly less desirable in my book.)

http://www.ford.co.t...ucks/new-ranger

(Absolutely nothing wrong with it, other than that it's not a Toyota or Isuzu. They really went all-out on the top model to give it just about any luxury feature you can think of. Blingiest truck around in the Wildtrak-version.)

Thanks. Will bargain for the xtras.

OK will try all 3 locations.

Why not the new Chevy, Isuzu or Ford? .... Don't really know much about these because the only experience I had was owning a 4-door Vigo for 6 years (sold it in 2010) - loved the Vigo, never had a problem and the trips cross country in it were spectacular.

I understand that there is no more Vigo, having been replaced by the Prerunner or some such?

Is there a significant price difference if I did go to Ford, Isuzu or Chevy?

Any idea if what I heard elsewhere is true, namely that if one opts for Toyota's financing they would give 0% for 1 year with (?) thereafter and I can get in with 30% down?

Thanks for the pointers

Nope; it's still the Vigo model. It had a minor-change update recently. They seem to have added a 'Champ' badge.

'Prerunner' refers to the model that has the same ride-height as the 4WD, but without the actual four wheel drive. So it's suitable for showing off, while being cheaper than the real 4WD model.

Is there a significant price difference if I did go to Ford, Isuzu or Chevy?

No. Salespeople may be more inclined to give free stuff for models that are less in vogue, including free insurance for a year, favorable financing and all kinds of add-on options. (Rear camera and sensors, etc, etc.)

Don't know; but financing options do vary. You will likely need (someone with) some land as a guarantee, though some brands offer financing without this requirement. (Ford has done this in the past)

It would be in TG's name, I would put 25-30% down and pay the rest off in a year or tops, 2 years. Payments would likely run 10-15k THB per month - sound reasonable to you, WTK or have I missed something that might trip me up later?

Thanks for your help

Sorry, monthly payment would be obviously wrong if financing was for only 2 years.

I agree at a price of something like 800 - 900,000, with a 25% or 30% deposit that would leave 560,000 - 675,000 over 2 years thats 280 - 340.000 per year not including interest thats 23 - 28,000 per month

...and have you checked how soon can they deliver?.Everybody is backed up by the floods syndrome, but Toyota probably the most...I'l go with Ranger, much better truck for now....and if they don't pack it with to many extras right now,the truck is still cheeper than Toyota...IMO.

Better get out your calculator and thinking cap, the rates they quote for financing are no where near the real rates because of the way they are calculated. You might really be paying as much as twice the rate they quote.

Really no reason to do that and a lot of reasons not to do it. A friend told me his wife took his truck to a finance outfit and borrowed a bunch of money with the truck as collateral. Turns out the truck was in her name so he was totally wrong telling me that it was his truck. He said, well I paid for it which makes absolutely no difference except to identify who lost.

You can put the truck in your name easily, the dealer will do it, don"t let anyone tell you different. Unless of course you are making it a gift to your GF.

Yes, they don't do proper interest calculations, so that's something to take into account.

(They use 4th grade primary school math, like this: If the loan is for 600,000 baht and the interest is 4%, paid over 6 years, then 4% of 600K is 24K, multiplied by 6 years is 144K, so total amount gets to 600K + 144K = 744K, divided by 72 months, equals 10,333 baht per month.)

So the longer the loan, the more this counts in their favor. Good reason not to spread it out too much if you don't need to.

OK, with let's say 300k down it would be around 20k per month if term is 36 months .... approx. of course.

I thought the back up problem was over. How many months are we talking then for delivery?

How much cheaper is the Ranger and is it more reliable that Toyota? Long useful life is a factor because I'd like to keep it for many, many years

by keeping it in top condition with proper maintenance.

Thanks for any tips forthcoming

How so Dante? I mean if they say 5% APR, does that term mean something different in LOS?

I don't mind it being a gift really, she has taken care of me for 11 years, never a problem, never a lie and always there for me. One thing that bothers me is that if I croak and the car is in my name and even if we are married (likely this year we will tie the knot for reasons explained herein) those crooks at the US Embassy will bully her and steal it from her. I don't want that to happen and would like her to have everything I have without a problem. This is the main reason I wanted to put the car etc. in her name.

Would greatly appreciate the knowledgeable fellows here advising me on the proper course of action.

The girl is the best thing that happened to me EVER.

Thanks, I don't think I would want to go more than a 5-yr term, but most likely 36 months ought to sit right with me.

One other possibility exists - if this <deleted> economy doesn't totally crap out, I could pay the truck off in 4-8 months - I would like

there to not be any penalty for full payoff. They surely would want to earn Interest somehow so I'm not sure about how it would

be in such a scenario. Always willing to learn the ropes, need your advice.

Many thanks.

The flood is over, but the back up problem still exist...they just started to sell the Ranger, but there is a waiting list..how long for new entrants ?...don't know..

The Ranger T6 2.2 XLT4 dr, 6 speed automatic costs 799 K...and this is the cheapest price right now of any of 4 dr trucks...

Is it as reliable as Toyota ?...probably...Toyota is just more popular here..go figure smile.png

Yes, it's as reliable as anything. Probably because Mazda had a lot to say about Ford trucks for the non-US market. wink.png

Too bad the Mazda version looks like a giant dick.

It actually looks so much like a dick that you can't even find a picture of it unless you turn Google's SafeSearch off. :P

No argument on putting it in the name of a trusted life long partner, but how would the US Embassy bully her and steal it from her? You just make a will. (And/or marry her.) (Or even fill in an ownership transfer form along with a signed copy of your passport) It's all under Thai law, not US law.

US embassy? A friend died in Phuket, saw how the whole thing was handled, it was worse than in the wild when vultures swoop down to dine - both the Thai lady and even his only surviving family member, a sister in Colorado got the total shaft.

smile.png Rugged looking trucks.

At 800k the Ranger is only 100k more than the Toyota Vios and the same price as the Altis. Elsewhere it was suggested to me to just get a Vios or Altis. Seems like poor value to me to go for a car instead of a pickup.

One thing to consider is the availability of service. Can you get a Ford fixed in Mai Hong Son or other smaller communities?

Toyota has far more service departments in Thailand.

If you plan on never leaving Chiang Mai forget what ever I already said.

On the other hand there are people in Chiang Mai who consider a ten mile trip to be inconvenient.

So the longer the loan, the more this counts in their favor. Good reason not to spread it out too much if you don't need to.

All that means that the interest rate they quote is about half the real interest rate because they have calculated the interest on the full balance for the full term and...but the true average balance over the loan term is closer to half.

What does the US Embassy have to do with probating wills in Thailand? If it is a Thai will I can not imagine it. If it is a US will, I still can't imagine it.
