Floods - Should I Cancel My 13/12 Trip?

Featured Replies

Hello all, apologies if I am repeating what others have posted but I am very concerned about the floods and damage to Koh Samui. I have never been to Thailand and I am coming over from the UK with my mother, we are staying at Spa Samui. How are things looking over there? is there any danger? we are reading mixed reports and it would be nice to hear from a resident or someone who has experience of the weather for some advice. We are leaving UK on 13/12 and will be there for Xmas.

Thanks Alot.

Go for it you should be fine on thise dates, even now the Spa Samui is running very busy, enjoy yourself. Which one are you staying at? I have stayed at both, both very good, but I prefer the one up the hill, ie not the beach. It's very quiet...

Thanks, I am staying at the beach.

The beach is still very good, and a bit nearer to things if you want to get out and about.

Are you doing the fast or is it just a holiday?

Hi,

Me too going KS next week for a short holiday. Not too bother about the raining though but if its flooding or storming then it may pose much inconvenience. Hopefully, it don't rains the whole day and the shops are opened 'cos I am basically going there to shop, eat and relax...

Cheers.

Hi guys

I guess I should share part of an email i received today from my brother who has lived Koh Samui for past 13 years

We have been having severe storms over here for the last 2 weeks and today we are on our 10th day of rain running. Many people have lost their homes and businesses washed away.We were closed for 2 days as all the roads into Chaweng were flooded.I was trapped in my room for 2 days as my apartment building was under 6 ft of water and I had only instant noodles and a loaf to eat ! as I write its absolutely pissing down and the roads are starting to flood again.I honestly have never been so depressed out here .All the thais are miserable too.The old woman I buy the fruit from has been here 30years and told me she has never known it like this. There doesnt seem to be an end to it at all.Every time it stops you think, right thats it maybe, then 20 minuts later we get hit with another bout.3 people have been killed so far.

I will be back in 3 weeks .. hope its all finished by then :o

:D sounds terrible...... and dangerous..... I feel for the people who have been affected and im trying not to think about myself and my holiday but I have worked all year for this trip, and i will also suffer financial loss if I cancel, but I know that is the least I should be thinking about as I know tourism is the main industry and income for many thai's on KS and I feel for all the people who have been affected by this adverse weather.

I really dont know what to do.... :D I think I will have to wait until friday/saturday and make a serious decision.

Thankyou all for your responses they are very much appreciated.

It could be over by Friday, keep a close eye on the weather forecast and ask here about the weather again on friday!

thanks alot, I have been checking the CNN weather for the past 2 weeks and it has said the same thing. Sounds like this rain is being relentless.

@KSM

My advice:Don´t go shopping in Samui! It´s at least 100% more expensive than BKK.A day in BKK even with hotel will save you a lot of money if you are really looking to shop intensive.

According to my husband the Thai news says over in the next 2 days. Lets hope so, I am finally getting a little stir crazy!

Thats good advice to me as well because I have never been to Thailand but we are not coming to shop, I dont have the money. I am coming out for a detox and to do yoga, sure i will buy a couple of trinkets as a momento but unfortunately I dont have the money for any retail therapy!

I checked this link today

http://www.tmd.go.th/program/warning_list_eg.php#

And it said monsoon is intensifying, looks like I will be packing my wellie boots :D:o

Flip-flops and a very light rain covering is all you need, it's still very hot! I can't imagine what the locals would make of wellies!

Leeluu, Spa Samui should be fine. It's off the ring road and shouldn't be affected by the flooding. They have a very good reputation. All the people that I know that do workshops and the like at The Sanctuary go there for treatments and fasting. The Sanctuary is on KPN.

There is also a place in Pai that is called The Sanctuary, no connection to the one on KPN, that I hear amazing things about. You could think about going to another part of the Kingdom.

I was joking about the wellies, but i am prepared for the worst weather wise, that way if it gets better its a bonus! I see the humidity is high so it will be an interesting experience for me.

Ive never heard of The Sanctuary, I will look it up on the net. Thanks for the input re the Spa. My decision is made, unless they close the airports because of the weather, I am coming and I cant wait......... :o

Good to hear you have decided to still come to Samui, you will be please to know that the sun has come out today, we still have some cloud cover but it feels warmer even though there is a breeze. The thing that most people have forgotten to tell you is that the temperature has been an average of 26 degrees all through the rain and flooding. I don't know were you are travelling from but having spoken to family in the UK its alot warmer here.

Re Spa Samui - great choice we eat there loads and it is a wonderful place to relax. The food is great too ( if your not fasting that is).

Rose - Thanks...... Im in london and yes its been freezing cold so bring on the heat! I am fasting at the Spa, but will be there for a couple of weeks so will have some time at the end to have some juices and raw light veggie meals. I CANNOT WAIT....

I am sure you will have a great time even if we still have some rain while you are here. Samui is a lovely place, its just a shame that most of the expats here forget how wonderful it is. Maybe they need to have a trip back to their home Country to realise how lucky they are.

You don't even need a trip to your home country. A week in Pattaya and Bangkok is enough to appreciate this island! We were very glad coming back, even when its raining!! Although Bangkok is great for shopping (I had to buy a new suitcase for my purchases) and much, much cheaper then Samui! I was very happy seeing the sun this afternoon and I hope the rains have come to a stop!

Looks like its clearing, the next rain will be further south. (keeping my fingers crossed on that one!) but here is the latest weather map from weather.com

yes! this is the second day in a row with beautiful weather on koh phangan so it looks like the worst of it is finally over! (crossing my fingers)
